The St. Marys Area cross country teams closed out their regular season Tuesday afternoon by defeating the Brockway squads in a meet held at the SMAHS course.
The Dutchmen defeated the Rovers by a 21-38 score, while the Lady Dutch won by a 27-28 margin. The Dutch finished their dual-meet season with a 10-4 record, while the Lady Dutch finished with a 9-3 mark.
SMA’s Justin Huey and Adair Gennocro won their respective races on Senior Night for the Dutch.
The Ridgway Area Lady Elkers came up with a 3-2 victory over the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch in a volleyball match held on Tuesday evening at the Ridgway Area High School gym. Ridgway took the opening game of the best-of-five set at 25-12, with the Lady Dutch taking the second game, 26-24. The Lady Elkers came up with a 25-13 win in game three, but the Lady Dutch took game four by a 25-26 score. In the final game, the Lady Elkers won by a 15-10 score to win the match 3-2.
An Area Transportation Authority hub at the soon-to-be-constructed parking garage on Depot Street took a step closer to becoming a reality on Monday evening, when members of city council voted to approve entering into a lease agreement for the facility.

State Representative Matt Gabler, R-Elk/Clearfield, and Democratic state House candidate Frank Straub laid out their respective plans for the area during a Monday evening debate hosted by the Elk County Tea Party. The two men are vying for the state House seat in the 75th Legislative District currently occupied by Gabler. The candidates answered questions submitted by members of the Tea Party and the public at the event.
Area residents tired of negotiating around the road construction in the Depot Street area only have about a month to go before the project is expected to be completed.
Work is progressing on schedule and, according to city manager Dave Greene, has not faced any major delays. The Depot Street reconstruction project consists of replacing the existing asphalt, curbs, sidewalks and storm sewer system.
The portion of the roadway spanning from South Michael Street to the CareerLink office has been under construction since early September.
Florance L. Vasbinder, 73, of 503 First Ave., Johnsonburg, and formerly of Kane and Phoenix, AZ, died Sunday, Oct. 17, 2010, at Elk Regional Health Center in St. Marys following a brief illness. Arrangements are incomplete at this time and will be announced by the Anthony F. Ferragine Funeral Home Inc., Johnsonburg.
Kaylynn Marie “Roo” Kolesar, 22, of Wysox RR 2, Wysox Twp., died Friday afternoon, Oct. 15, 2010 following a motor vehicle accident in Wyalusing Twp.
Stella E. Geyer, age 90, of 122 Skyline Dr., Kersey, died early Monday morning, Oct. 18, 2010, after a lengthy illness.
Susan Beck, 64, of 276 West Creek Rd., died unexpectedly Monday, Oct. 18, 2010 at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh.
She was born Oct. 13, 1946, in St. Marys, daughter of the late Edward and Matilda Lecker Gerg.
On April 27, 1968, in St. Mary's Church, she married Floyd R. Beck, who survives.
