Crystal Fire Department: service with pride

After 110 years of service to St. Marys and the surrounding communities, the Crystal Fire Department is still going strong. The department is owned by the City of St. Marys, but is staffed by volunteers. The 92 men and women currently with the department take care of all fire, rescue and related emergencies for the citizens of St. Marys and outlying areas.

C/G management proactively pursuing Marcellus gas drilling

Representatives of C/G Electrodes, LLC recently came before members of St. Marys City Council concerning applications to subdivide two parcels from C/G's property for use as potential Marcellus Shale drilling sites.
Council members voted unanimously to approve each of the subdivision requests.
Wilson Fisher Jr. of Hess & Fisher Engineers, Inc. of Clearfield addressed council members regarding C/G's plans for the site. He explained that the company was requesting two separate lots be subdivided off of the company's main 150-acre property.

Commission faces setback changing shade tree boundaries

Efforts to redefine the geographic boundaries of city shade trees hit a setback earlier this week when a motion to publish an ordinance that would change part of the city code failed to gain support from enough members of St. Marys City Council. The motion to publish Ordinance 264 was rejected by a 4-3 vote.

Mine reclamation, watershed rehabilitation projects come to fruition

Local, county and state officials recently gathered at the Gilbert Farm Homestead in Benezette, Elk County for the dedication of State Game Lands 311. The mine reclamation project restored over 48 acres in the Dents Run Watershed, which encompasses just over 25 square miles in Benezette Township.
The project entailed the cooperation of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), Bureau of Abandoned Mine Reclamation (BAMR), U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACOE) and the Pennsylvania Game Commission (PGC).

Smethport soccer hands Lady Dutch 6-2 setback

The Smethport Lady Hubber soccer team handed the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch squad a 6-2 loss Wednesday afternoon at the SMAHS soccer field.
Wednesday was Senior Night for the Lady Dutch, with the seniors and their parents being recognized in special halftime ceremonies.
It was also a “Pink Game,” with the Lady Dutch and Lady Hubbers showing their support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month by wearing pink uniforms and socks.
Smethport got on the board first when they scored with 25:31 left in the first half.

Lady Dutch tennis team beats Brockway 6-4

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch tennis team handed the Brockway Lady Rovers a 6-3 loss Wednesday afternoon in a match played at Brockway.
The Lady Dutch, now 7-5 on the year, will close out their season this afternoon as they are scheduled to travel to Bradford for a 3:30 p.m. match.
At first singles, SMA’s Rachel Walker won 6-4, 5-7, 10-5 in a third-set tiebreaker over Brittany Johnson.
At second singles, Chelsea Facchine of the Lady Rovers beat Allison Shields 6-2, 6-2.
Jamie VanAlstine of the Lady Dutch defeated Cassie Foradori 6-0, 6-3 at third singles.

Dutch host Union in Homecoming game, Crusaders travel to Curwensville Friday

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch and the Elk County Catholic football teams both return to action Friday night. The Dutchmen will host the Union Golden Knights in their Homecoming game, while the Crusaders will travel to Curwensville for a key AML South Division contest.

Homecoming ceremonies for the Dutch will take place at halftime of this KSAC game.
The Dutchmen of coach Joe Schlimm will bring a 4-3 record into the contest.
St. Marys had defeated Clarion-Limestone 55-12, Clarion 14-7, Moniteau 46-15 and Redbank Valley 28-14.
