Darren Simons of Elk County Catholic High School fired a five-over-par round of 76 in the opening round of the PIAA State Golf Tournament at the Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York. Darren fired a three over 39 on the front side and a two over 37 on the back side on Monday.
The District 9 soccer playoffs opened Monday night in boys’ Class A, while the girls’ Class A tournament is scheduled to open today.
In Class AA tournaments, the girls’ tournament opens Wednesday with the boys’ tournament set to start Monday, Nov. 1.
A county-wide effort to promote breast cancer awareness last Friday had area residents seeing pink.
As part of a county-wide Pink Day, students in the St. Marys, Ridgway and Johnsonburg school districts, as well as employees at the Elk County Courthouse and North Central, dressed in pink clothing and accessories.
The idea behind the event first came about two years ago when Kate McGonnell, a guidance counselor at the St. Marys Area Middle School, coordinated a district-wide pink day. Students were encouraged to wear pink and various events were held at each of the different schools.
ERIE - St. Marys Area Middle School students participated in the Northwest Pennsylvania Middle School Association (NWPMSA) Student Leadership Conference held on Oct. 19 at the James S. Wilson Middle School in Erie.
As interest in the development of the Marcellus Shale continues to grow, many people want to find out more of the basic facts about the massive natural gas formation. Recently Scott Weikert, a Forest Resource Educator from the Forest County Penn State Cooperative Extension, presented a basic overview on the Marcellus Shale for landowners.
Nancy L. Robinson, 63, of 122 Town View Rd., died unexpectedly Friday, Oct. 22, 2010, at her residence.
She was born Feb. 20, 1947, in St. Marys, daughter of the late James J. and Eileen M. Eckl Herzing. She was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of St. Marys High School, Class of 1965. She was a former employee of the Keystone Carbon Co.
On Oct. 4, 1969, in the Sacred Heart Church, she married Ronald E. Robinson, who survives.
Raymond B. Knepper, 67, a resident of Elk Haven Nursing Home and formerly of Erie Avenue, died unexpectedly on Sunday, Oct. 24, 2010 at the Elk Regional Health Center.
He was born May 29, 1943 in Waynesboro, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Knepper.
On Sept. 9, 1972, in Cresson, he married Lucille Heiberger, who survives.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a sister, Barb Moates of Hagerstown, Md. and a brother, Bob Knepper of Waynesboro.
Mr. Knepper worked at ELCAM for the past 17 years.
James F. Hanes, 68, of 334 Walnut St., St. Marys, died Saturday, Oct. 22, 2010, at the Elk Regional Health Center after a lengthy illness.
He was born Aug. 12, 1942, in St. Marys, son of the late Ernest and Loretta Haberberger Hanes. He was a graduate of St. Marys High School and had lived in Indiana, Pa. and Pittsburgh for several years.
Katherine A. Groll, 89, of 185 Center St., Elk Towers, and formerly of South Michael Road, died Saturday morning, Oct. 23, 2010, at the Elk Regional Health Center after a brief illness.
She was born March 6, 1921, in Fallensbee, W.Va., daughter of the late George and Alice Dale Cartwright. She was a lifelong resident of the area and attended St. Marys schools. She served as a waitress in many of the area restaurants.
On Jan. 12, 1944, in St. Marys, she married William E. Groll, who preceded her in death on July 27, 2005.
Mildred A. Cassels, 94, of 16678 Boot Jack Rd., Ridgway, died Saturday evening, Oct. 23, 2010, at the DuBois Nursing Home following a brief illness.
She was born Aug. 26, 1916 in Weedville, daughter of the late Henry B. and Lottie M. (McClintick) Wheeler.
She married William (Lorriane) Cassels on Nov. 26, 1935. He preceded her in death on Sept. 6, 1994.
