James E. "Jim" Howard

James E. “Jim” Howard, 71, of 17 Klondike Rd., Johnsonburg, died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2010 at his residence following a lengthy illness.
He was born Oct.11, 1939 in Olean, NY, son of the late Ralph E. and Julia M. Oviatt Howard.
He married Janet Pearl Sample on Aug. 23, 1958. She preceded him in death on Feb. 4, 1988. On March 15, 1991, he married Kathryn Allegretto Valentine, who survives.

Lady Crusader volleyball ends regular season undefeated

JOHNSONBURG - The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders finished the regular season undefeated with a 3-1 (25-22, 25-23, 21-25, 25-15) victory over Johnsonburg last night at Johnsonburg Area High School.
The Ramettes honored five seniors before the game: Cody Anderson, daughter of Carol Anderson, Paige DeCecchis, daughter of Ed and Lynell DeCecchis, Taylor Harvey, daughter of Kristene and the late John Harvey, Justis Myers, daughter of Justin and Kelly Myers and Tori Stanley, daughter of Dave and Annie Stanley.

Tristan Jace Burke

Tristan Jace Burke, three months old, of Caledonia, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2010 at home.
He was born Aug. 2, 2010 in DuBois, son of Stanley and Nicole (Decker) Burke II, who survive.

Lady Dutch end regular season with 3-0 win

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch volleyball squad celebrated Senior Night with a 3-0 victory over the visiting Brookville Lady Raiders in their regular-season finale at the "Dutch Oven" on Thursday night. The Lady Dutch won the best-of-five match, 3-0, on games of 25-19, 25-12 and 25-18.

St. Marys CC Ladies win Challenge Cup

The St. Marys Country Club ladies repeated as the Challenge Cup champions, defeating the Bavarian Hills Golf Course ladies by a 39-33 score in the 36-hole match. The two teams played evenly at the St. Marys Country Club as both squads scored 18 points each, but the difference was the St. Marys CC win at the Hills by a 21-15 score.
This marked the second consecutive year that the St. Marys Country Club ladies won the tournament.

Merle C. Lecker

Merle C. Lecker, 94, of the Elk Haven Nursing Home and formerly of 537 E. Kaul Avenue, St. Marys, died on Tuesday evening, Oct. 26, 2010 at Elk Haven Nursing Home following a brief illness.
He was born Sept. 5, 1916 in St. Marys, a son of the late Joseph and Anna Greitl Lecker.
On Sept. 11, 1942, he married the late Genevieve Shuttleworth Lecker, who preceded him in death on Dec. 8, 1992.

Recycling center begins baling

The Community Recycling Center, located in the Stackpole Complex in St. Marys, recently began baling plastic and other items that have been received since it opened its doors at the beginning of October. According to Bekki Titchner, Elk County recycling coordinator, so far the center has processed eight bales of plastic and two bales of corrugated cardboard. She noted that the center has been receiving items at a tremendous rate since discontinuing the drop-off containers in St. Marys and eliminating the collection of plastic at other sites throughout the county.

Program helping patients to Look Good...Feel Better

In an effort to provide renewed self-esteem to women suffering from cancer, the American Cancer Society’s Look Good...Feel Better program teaches women to overcome some of the disease’s appearance-related side effects, such as hair loss and changes in skin complexion and fingernails.
The free, national public service program is geared toward helping women undergoing cancer treatments regain a sense of self-esteem and self-confidence, as well as control of their lives.

ITEC talks continue

Eric Bridges, executive director of the North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission, announced Wednesday that productive talks are still ongoing regarding the entity's Industrial Technology Education Center [ITEC] facility situated on the campus along Montmorenci Road.

Peter Gary Garbic, 68, of 1126 Bosch Dr., Green Valley, AZ, and a former St. Marys resident, died on Sunday, Oct. 24, 2010 at the St. Mary’s Hospital in Tucson, AZ, after a lengthy illness.
He was born June 3, 1942, in St. Marys, son of the late Peter J. Garbic and Ann Burdick Garbic. He was a lifelong resident of the area and had lived in Arizona for the past 2 1/2 years. He was the retired owner of Pete’s Pepperoni in St. Marys.
