Raymond B. Knepper

October 25, 2010

Raymond B. Knepper, 67, a resident of Elk Haven Nursing Home and formerly of Erie Avenue, died unexpectedly on Sunday, Oct. 24, 2010 at the Elk Regional Health Center.
He was born May 29, 1943 in Waynesboro, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Knepper.
On Sept. 9, 1972, in Cresson, he married Lucille Heiberger, who survives.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a sister, Barb Moates of Hagerstown, Md. and a brother, Bob Knepper of Waynesboro.
Mr. Knepper worked at ELCAM for the past 17 years.

James F. Hanes

James F. Hanes, 68, of 334 Walnut St., St. Marys, died Saturday, Oct. 22, 2010, at the Elk Regional Health Center after a lengthy illness.
He was born Aug. 12, 1942, in St. Marys, son of the late Ernest and Loretta Haberberger Hanes. He was a graduate of St. Marys High School and had lived in Indiana, Pa. and Pittsburgh for several years.

Katherine A. Groll

Katherine A. Groll, 89, of 185 Center St., Elk Towers, and formerly of South Michael Road, died Saturday morning, Oct. 23, 2010, at the Elk Regional Health Center after a brief illness.
She was born March 6, 1921, in Fallensbee, W.Va., daughter of the late George and Alice Dale Cartwright. She was a lifelong resident of the area and attended St. Marys schools. She served as a waitress in many of the area restaurants.
On Jan. 12, 1944, in St. Marys, she married William E. Groll, who preceded her in death on July 27, 2005.

Mildred A. Cassels

Mildred A. Cassels, 94, of 16678 Boot Jack Rd., Ridgway, died Saturday evening, Oct. 23, 2010, at the DuBois Nursing Home following a brief illness.
She was born Aug. 26, 1916 in Weedville, daughter of the late Henry B. and Lottie M. (McClintick) Wheeler.
She married William (Lorriane) Cassels on Nov. 26, 1935. He preceded her in death on Sept. 6, 1994.

Local outdoors enthusiasts raise $9,000 for Hunt of a Lifetime

ST. MARYS - The Bucktail Archers, in conjunction with the St. Marys Sportsmen's Club and Bowfishing Association of America, recently held a two-day event in order to raise money for Hunt of a Lifetime Foundation, Inc. Attendees were given the opportunity to participate in a 3D Archery Shoot, Bowfishing Pond Shoot, Trap Competition and a 50/50 Archer Contest. In addition to those activities, tickets were sold for a Hunt of a Lifetime tapestry blanket, cash/bore hunt, compound bow and a digital trail camera.

Dutch football Senior Night Friday

The St. Marys Area Quarterback Club is honoring the Dutch senior football players this week and at Friday night’s game at Dutch Country Stadium when they host Karns City. The senior players are: Robert Rollick, Nick DeStephano, Ryan Merritt, Kevin Hoy, Brian Eichmiller, Brad Yetzer, Kyle Wolfel, Jimmy Antonelli, Josh Rogers, John Kronenwetter, Kyle Schneider. Darren Lyon. Missing from the photo is senior manager Amy Donachy. Everyone is welcome to come to Dutch Stadium to honor these seniors. Recognition will begin at 6:15 p.m.

DisABILITY event teaches respect for all

At "Who I Am:" Discovering the Value in disABILITY, members of the community learned more about how people with disabilities view the world and themselves, how to look through stereotypes to the person beyond, and how everyone is worthy of respect. The presentation, organized by local residents and sponsored by the Erie Diocese and the PEAL Center, was held in the gymnasium at St. Marys Catholic Elementary School on Sunday afternoon.

CFD celebrates years of service

The Crystal Fire Department honored several members for their years of service at a banquet held Saturday night at the St. Marys Country Club. Department member Ken "Rookie" Weidow served as master of ceremonies at the event. In addition to service awards, the department also recognized people who recently finished their rigorous basic training course that allows them to participate in firefighting and rescue activities.
Bill Kraus, CFD's fire chief, said the annual banquet recognizes members for their hard work and dedication during their time with the all-volunteer organization.

Schaut helped set wheels in motion in creation of Bavarian Hills

Paul Schaut was one of a number of individuals who, after frequently traveling to Emporium to play golf, decided that St. Marys needed a public course of its own.
Schaut was honored for his involvement in making Bavarian Hills Golf Course a reality during the second annual Bavarian Hills Honoree's Banquet on Sunday afternoon.
Howard McClain, who worked with Schaut several years ago on the construction of an addition to the course's clubhouse, discussed Schaut's contributions to the facility during the ceremony.
