Ida J. Allegretto

Ida J. Allegretto, 86, of 814 Spruce St., Johnsonburg, died Tuesday morning, Nov. 9, 2010, at Elk Regional Health Center in St. Marys following a short illness.
She was born on July 18, 1924 in Johnsonburg, daughter of the late Andrew and Stella Gorna Mrofchinski. She married Theodore "Ted" Allegretto on Jan. 30, 1946, who preceded her in death on Aug. 16, 1994.

Crusaders play host to Gators Friday in 9-A playoffs

The Elk County Catholic Crusaders football team will open play in the District 9 Class A playoffs Friday night by playing host to the Port Allegany Gators.
Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Dutch Country Stadium.
The Crusaders of coach Travis Skrzypek enter the playoffs as the second-ranked team out of the Allegheny Mountain Football League (AML) with a 7-2 record.
The Crusaders opened the season with a six-game winning streak, having defeated Cameron County 34-12, Otto-Eldred 56-16, Coudersport 26-21, Port Allegany 27-20, Johnsonburg 34-8 and Kane 27-13.

SMA’s Brittany Orr MVP of UAVSL North School

The Upper Allegheny Valley Soccer League (UAVSL) recently announced the all-stars teams for the league’s three divisions, North, South and Central.
Brittany Orr of the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch was named the MVP of the Girls’ North School team. Orr, a senior, is joined by Kane seniors Tina Mosier and Andrea Saquin, Port Allegany’s Brianna Evens, a senior, and junior Jordan Edgell, Ridgway’s Courtney Bush, a junior, Bryton Dybowski, a senior, sophomore Rhianon Fowler and junior Amanda Maddalena, Smethport senior Elizabeth Dittman and St. Marys junior Lauren Challingsworth.

Hoohuli signs Letter of Intent with Canisius

St. Marys Area senior Kayla Hoohuli signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball at Canisius College in Buffalo, N.Y. Kayla is the daughter of Dan and Leona Hoohuli.
Hoohuli led her high school team to their third straight District 9-AAA championship in 2009-2010 as a junior. She averaged 30.3 points per game to go along with 8.8 rebounds per game, 7.3 steals per game and 4.4 assists per game.

Capt. Loudon recognizes veterans’ sacrifices

U.S. Army Captain Nicholas Loudon of Brockway connected faces and names with the sacrifice made by past, present and deceased veterans as part of the annual St. Marys Area School District Veterans Day Program on Wednesday.

Area veterans honored during high school program

Area veterans were recognized for their service and sacrifice to our country as part of the annual Veterans Day Assembly Program held Wednesday afternoon at St. Marys Area High School’s Carpin Auditorium.
Students, faculty and staff from the high school and middle school gathered inside the auditorium to pay tribute to local veterans.
SMAHS Senior Mandy Gerarge acted as the event’s emcee. Following her introduction of the SMAHS band, which opened the program with a performance of “Silvercrest March,” Gerarge reminded the audience of the purpose of Veterans Day.

Council discusses road improvement plans

At city council's most recent budget meeting, Tom Farley, St. Marys resident and former city councilman, addressed council members regarding a $1 million loan they recently approved for paving projects. Farley questioned whether council members would be able to lower the millage for the city's 2011 budget if they postponed the paving project.
Council members indicated they believe that many of the road issues need to be addressed now, or else their conditions will continue to deteriorate and it will end up costing more money to repair them in the future.
