Sylvester S. Himes, 69, of 455 Fairview Hill Road, Ridgway, died Thursday evening at Pinecrest Manor in St. Marys following a lengthy illness.

William A. Johnson

November 13, 2010

William A. Johnson, 75, of Pinecrest Manor, died Friday, Nov. 12, 2010 at his residence.
He was born March 23, 1935, in Philipsburg, the son of the late William R. and Margaret Goss Johnson. Mr. Johnson had resided in Ridgway for most of his life. He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
He had been employed at Motion Control and at the Boot Jack Service Station. He enjoyed playing bingo.
He is survived by a cousin, Donna Penfield of Ridgway.

Deceased veterans honored during holiday season

In order to honor deceased veterans in local cemeteries, Helpings Hands of St. Marys is hoping to place a wreath on the grave of every deceased veteran in St. Marys and Kersey for the holiday season.
Dolly Wehler, member of Helping Hands, said her organization has been decorating veterans' graves with holiday wreaths for the past few years in conjunction with a program called Wreaths Across America. This year, they are working together with the Vietnam Veterans of America Bucktail Chapter 720 to expand the project to the Kersey area.

George T. Stroup, 85, of Weedville, died Saturday, Nov. 6, 2010, in New Jersey.
He was born Jan. 3, 1925 in Greenville, son of the late Joseph and Mabel Patterson Stroup.
He married E. Jane Rhine, who preceded him in death.

William McKinney

November 12, 2010

William McKinney, 65, of 1070 E. Eschbach Road, St. Marys, died on Thursday, Nov. 11, 2010, at the DuBois Nursing Home after a brief illness.
He was born July 20, 1945, in Westville, son of the late William and Effie Wolf McKinney.
On Aug. 24, 1968, in the Brockway Methodist Church, he married Nancy E. Brown, who survives.

Elk County Catholic recognizes fall sports athletes

The Elk County Catholic High School held its annual Fall Athletic Awards program on Wednesday evening in the high school auditorium. Principal Sandy Florig opened the program with an invocation and an overview of the evening’s activities. Elk County Catholic Athletic Association president Chris Schneider welcomed the parents and athletes and informed the group of the upcoming Athletic Association and school events. He also noted that the varsity programs at the school presently have a 100-16-2 record so far this season.

Annual Veterans Day Memorial Service held

Annual Veterans Day observances took place throughout the City of St. Marys on Thursday, beginning with observances at area churches, including a 7 a.m. Mass at Queen of the World Church and an 8:45 a.m. Mass at St. Mary's Church in honor of all the living and deceased veterans of the military service.

Distler remarks on courage of American troops

"Today, Nov. 11, Veterans Day, is a time we have set aside to remember and celebrate these great Americans," said Jim Distler, Adjutant of St. Marys American Legion Post 103, guest speaker at the city's annual Veterans Day Memorial Service. The service was held on the Diamond in downtown St. Marys yesterday at 11 a.m.
In his brief remarks, Distler discussed two groups of American soldiers who, though from different time periods, both displayed the same sort of courage in fighting for their country.

Board approves personnel items

The St. Marys Area School District Board of Directors approved several personnel issues at this month’s regular meeting.
All employment recommendations are provisional for 30 days pending receipt of Act 151 and Act 34 clearance documentation and pre-employment drug testing if applicable.
Three unpaid leaves of absences were approved.
Supplemental contracts were awarded to:
• Thomas Bussard, intramural wrestling coach, renewal at a rate of $500;
• Daniele Auman, new contract pool supervisor, at a rate of $15/hour, and Bennetts Valley Yearbook Advisor, renewal at a rate of $105;

Ida J. Allegretto, 86, of 814 Spruce St., Johnsonburg, died Tuesday morning, Nov. 9, 2010, at Elk Regional Health Center in St. Marys following a short illness.
She was born on July 18, 1924 in Johnsonburg, daughter of the late Andrew and Stella Gorna Mrofchinski. She married Theodore "Ted" Allegretto on Jan. 30, 1946, who preceded her in death on Aug. 16, 1994.
