BENEZETTE â€“Â People venturing to the Elk Country Visitor Center in Benezette are encouraged to contribute to an ongoing project that the center has undertaken for the holiday season.
St. Marys Area High Schoolâ€™s DECA Club had an impressive showing at the District 1 Competition, as over 30 members advanced to the State Leadership Conference taking place in Hershey from Feb. 23-25, 2011.
Approximately 145 DECA students from throughout the region recently gathered at The Royal Inn in Ridgway for the district competition.
DECA Clubs from McDowell, Bradford and St. Marys high schools participated, along with students enrolled at Jeff Tech and Venango Technical Center.
Elsie I. Schroeder Geci, 85, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Dec. 4, 2010.
She was born in Camden, NJ, daughter of the late Edward and Marie Hoade Schroeder.
She was a homemaker and loving wife of 63 years to John Geci Jr., and enjoyed being a grandmother and great-grandmother.
Timothy Dean Sheriff, 51, of Punxsutawney, died Sunday, Dec. 12, 2010 at home.
Â He was born Jan. 3, 1959, in Punxsutawney, son of Ronald Sheriff of DuBois and Mrs. John (Gladys Carr) Oaks of Punxsutawney.
Â He was employed at NAC Carbon Products in Elk Run and was a member of the Punxsutawney Eagles Club. He adored his daughter Carrie, whom he loved very much. His enjoyments in life were fishing, taking walks, riding his bike, sitting at the ball field to clear his thoughts, taking care of his turtle, being in the outdoors and remembering his days of working on the drilling rigs.
The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch basketball team held on for a 55-49 victory over the Oswayo Valley Green Wave last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
While the Dutch led from the second quarter on, they could not build much of a lead until there was only 2:12 left in the contest, when they went up by 13, 54-41. However, Oswayo Valley then scored eight unanswered points to cut the Dutch lead to 54-49 with 1:11 left. The lone point scored in the final minutes of play was a foul shot by Dutchman Ryan Hockman, making the score 55-49.
