Lady Dutch defeat Port Allegany Lady Gators 60-33

The Lady Dutch of St. Marys Area High School ran their slate to 5-0 on Monday evening as they handed the Port Allegany Lady Gators a 60-33 setback in a game played at the "Dutch Oven".
The Lady Gators led only once in the ball game, and that was at the start, 2-0. St. Marys used a pressure defense to control the ball game, as they forced the Lady Gators into turnover after turnover, especially during the first half.

Lady Crusaders hold on to beat Lady Cardinals 43-39

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader basketball team held off the DuBois Central Catholic Lady Cardinals by a 43-39 score last night in an Allegheny Mountain League game played at the DCCHS gym.
The Lady Crusaders took a 20-15 lead at the half, then held on as the Lady Cardinals outscored ECC by a 24-23 margin in the last 16 minutes of play.
“This was a nice win on the road,” said ECCHS coach Ken Pistner.
“Our transition game improved tonight and we played good defense, holding Hopkins to nine points,” noted Pistner.

Council approves right-of-way agreement

Members of city council approved entering into a right-of-way agreement on Monday evening with Kaul Land Company. Through the agreement, the city will allow Kaul Land Company to cross city-owned land to access property near the St. Marys Airport while, in turn, Kaul Land Company will give, by deed of dedication, a section of property comprising part of Environmental Drive to the city.
According to Mark Jacob, city solicitor, the city and Kaul Land Company have been holding ongoing discussions about the matter for over three years.

Curiosity Shop thrives on Christmas experience

With Christmas right around the corner, patrons have been steadily visiting Dostal's Curiosity Shop, a longtime St. Marys business, which features a unique array of both international and local speciality items not found in typical toy or hobby stores. From Russian nesting dolls to Bavarian and German toys to an array of Nativity scenes from around the world, the shop offers items which pique the interest of both children and adults.

Helen J. Metro, 93, of Hartley Manor Assisted Living Community, 10171 Johnny Cake Ridge Rd., Concord, Ohio, died Monday afternoon, Dec. 20, 2010 at Tri-Point Medical Center in Concord Township, Ohio following a brief illness.
She was born Feb. 26, 1917 in Johnsonburg, daughter of the late Nicholas and Julia Hartz Lazore. On Nov. 4, 1944, in Holy Rosary Church in Johnsonburg she married John Metro, who preceded her in death on Jan. 1, 1982.

Ruby A. Gray

Ruby A. Gray, 76, of River Rd., Weedville, died Monday, Dec. 20, 2010 at Elk Haven Nursing Home following a recent illness.
She was born June 1, 1934 in Byrnedale, daughter of the late Ray and Angeline (Snyder) Wonderling.
On Oct. 1, 1952, she married Milton H. Gray of Weedville, who survives.  

Victoria L. “Vicki” Caros

Victoria L. “Vicki” Caros, age 61, of Johnsonburg, died Sunday, Dec. 12, 2010 at Pinecrest Manor in St. Marys after a short illness.
She was born Sept. 7, 1949 in Brookville, daughter of James Clifford, deceased, and Jeanne (Fredericks) Clifford, who survives, of Daguscahonda.
A homemaker and Catholic by faith, she loved animals and pets. She enjoyed volunteering her time to help neighbors and friends, and lived most of her life in the Ridgway and Johnsonburg area.

Supervisors approve paving loan

The Jay Township Supervisors plan to undertake a paving project within the township in the near future, and at their recent meeting approved securing a loan for the project from Northwest Savings Bank.
The supervisors originally discussed the project during their November meeting, at which time they approved advertising for bids for a $150,000 loan.
According to Debbie Leonard, township secretary, bids were received from two area banks, Northwest Savings Bank and First Commonwealth Bank.

Total lunar eclipse to occur early Tuesday morning

Early morning sky watchers have a chance to observe a total lunar eclipse Tuesday morning depending on the amount of cloud cover over the area.
The eclipse is set to begin at 1:33 a.m., according to NASA's website, with totality taking place at 2:41 a.m. The moon will be covered by Earth's shadow for a period of 72 minutes and the entire event is expected to last around three and a half hours.

Frances M. Nashadka

Frances M. Nashadka, 82, of 101 North Mill St., Ridgway died unexpectedly Saturday evening, Dec. 18, 2010 at her residence.
She was born Feb. 13, 1928 in Johnsonburg, daughter of the late Stanley and Waltrude (Kazmierski) Simchick. She married Felix Fashadka Jr. on May 14, 1949, and he preceded her in death.
She had resided in Ridgway for the last 24 years and was a former Johnsonburg and Wilcox resident. She was a graduate of the Johnsonburg High School and had attended the Duff Iron City Business School. She was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Ridgway.
