Council approves 2011 budget despite opposition

The 2011 budget for the City of St. Marys was approved by city council with a vote of 5-2 on Monday evening. Councilmen Sally Geyer and Dick Dornisch both voted in opposition, and the decision was not without some dissent from a few area residents as well.
During a public hearing held on the city's 2011 budget at the beginning of the city council meeting, a few residents addressed council about what they stated was an unfair increase in their property taxes.

ITEC interest continues

The Elk County Commissioners voted Tuesday to send a letter of intent to the North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission [NCPRPDC] officials expressing their interest in buying the Industrial Technical Education Center [ITEC].
"As commissioners are aware and as the press has reported, the county [officials] has been in discussion with North Central [officials] regarding the purchase of ITEC," said county solicitor Tom Wagner during a short board meeting Tuesday morning. "We've reached a point in our discussions now where we want to move forward.

Lunar eclipse kicks off winter seaso

For the first time in 372 years, the winter season got underway in unique fashion with a total lunar eclipse.
The winter solstice marks the shortest day and longest night of the year and this year, winter officially got underway at 6:38 p.m.
The last time a lunar eclipse corresponded with the winter solstice was Dec. 21, 1638. At that time, what is now the United States was only a series of young colonies under British control and William Penn had not even crossed the Atlantic to begin the settlement of what is now Pennsylvania.

Christmas on Candy Cane Lane

Dressed in festive colors of red, green and white, first grade students at South St. Marys Street Elementary sang and danced their way through their class musical, "Christmas on Candy Cane Lane," presented on Tuesday afternoon.
The 20-minute musical centered around Candy Cane Lane, which was abuzz with festive holiday preparation. Amidst the candy canes, lights, wreaths and evergreen Christmas trees, trouble was brewing as the candy canes debated over which was the best color for them, red or green.

Lady Dutch defeat Port Allegany Lady Gators 60-33

The Lady Dutch of St. Marys Area High School ran their slate to 5-0 on Monday evening as they handed the Port Allegany Lady Gators a 60-33 setback in a game played at the "Dutch Oven".
The Lady Gators led only once in the ball game, and that was at the start, 2-0. St. Marys used a pressure defense to control the ball game, as they forced the Lady Gators into turnover after turnover, especially during the first half.

Lady Crusaders hold on to beat Lady Cardinals 43-39

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader basketball team held off the DuBois Central Catholic Lady Cardinals by a 43-39 score last night in an Allegheny Mountain League game played at the DCCHS gym.
The Lady Crusaders took a 20-15 lead at the half, then held on as the Lady Cardinals outscored ECC by a 24-23 margin in the last 16 minutes of play.
“This was a nice win on the road,” said ECCHS coach Ken Pistner.
“Our transition game improved tonight and we played good defense, holding Hopkins to nine points,” noted Pistner.
