December 6th
Rosella F. Butsch, 86, of 333 Main St., Kersey, died peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, Dec. 4, 2010.
She was born May 29, 1924 in Kersey, a daughter of the late Bernard and Helen Thorwart Schneider.
In September 1955, she married James L. Butsch in the St. Boniface Church who preceded her in death in 1963.
Students at St. Marys Catholic Middle School are preparing to embark on a unique fundraiser. As part of their Heifer International Project, they are hoping to raise enough money to purchase an animal for an impoverished family.

The first of two public hearings for the 2011 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) application was held Monday evening during the St. Marys City Council meeting.
"The purpose of the public hearing is to provide an explanation for the CDBG program and for citizens to participate in presenting ideas for the development of plans for the city," explained Tina Gradizzi, community and economic development coordinator.

Jeanette Donachy, president of the Historical Society of St. Marys and Benzinger Township, commented on the recent activities of the society during the group’s 48th annual banquet held Sunday evening at the Diamond View Restaurant. The banquet commemorated the founding of Sancta Marienstadt on Dec. 8, 1842.
Donachy began by remarking that she was glad those in attendance could make it despite the weather conditions.
The Historical Society of St. Marys and Benzinger Township is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, and during the organization’s 48th annual banquet on Sunday night, members paid tribute to the society’s founder, Charles "Charlie" Schaut. The event marked the 129th anniversary of Schaut’s birth.
Bill Conrad, banquet emcee, said Schaut provided an invaluable contribution to area residents.
Robin L. Meyer, 39, of 152 Jackson Rd., St. Marys, died Friday morning, Dec. 3, 2010, at her home after a lengthy illness.
She was born June 17, 1971 in St. Marys, daughter of James Schatz of St. Marys and Linda Bush Smith of St. Marys.
She was a lifelong resident of the area and a graduate of St. Marys Area High School, Class of 1989. She was a part owner of Elk County Rustic Furniture.
On July 9, 1993, in St. Marys, she married Jude F. Meyer and he survives.
John G. Mattiuz, 67, of 105 Scotland St., Dagus Mines, died Wednesday evening, Dec. 1, 2010, at his home after a lengthy illness.
He was born June 17, 1943, in Ridgway, son of the late John M. and Mary G. Zuccolotto Mattiuz.
On Nov. 30, 1963, in the Holy Cross Church in Brandy Camp, he married Mary Jean Kline, who survives.
RIDGWAY – Unconfirmed reports received Friday morning indicate that Elk County officials may elect to relocate the county's 911 Center from its current location along Boot Jack Road to the Industrial Technical Education Center [ITEC] facility along Montmorenci Road.
December 3rd
The Fox Township Supervisors discussed Marcellus gas drilling in the township during their recent meeting and according to supervisor Mike Keller, the township is in the preliminary stages of working on a zoning ordinance to help place restrictions on future drilling in the township.
Responding to a question from an area resident regarding the number of Marcellus wells in the Boone Mountain area, Supervisor Randy Gradizzi stated that he believed there are about 27 more wells scheduled to be drilled in that area.
Keller added that the drilling is not going to go away.
Santa and Mrs. Claus kicked off Light Up Night in Kersey on Friday evening as they arrived in style at the Fox Township Community Park inside a colorful pick-up truck painted in the holiday colors of white with red and green stripes. The truck was situated on a trailer pulled by Dick Cooney’s Peterbilt logging truck. The Grinch kept an eye on the festivities as he was perched on the back of the trailer. Youngsters had the opportunity to visit with the Clauses, as Santa’s elves distributed bags filled with candy, a coloring book and other goodies.
