Local, county and state officials recently gathered at the Gilbert Farm Homestead in Benezette, Elk County for the dedication of State Game Lands 311. The mine reclamation project restored over 48 acres in the Dents Run Watershed, which encompasses just over 25 square miles in Benezette Township.
The project entailed the cooperation of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), Bureau of Abandoned Mine Reclamation (BAMR), U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACOE) and the Pennsylvania Game Commission (PGC).
The Smethport Lady Hubber soccer team handed the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch squad a 6-2 loss Wednesday afternoon at the SMAHS soccer field.
Wednesday was Senior Night for the Lady Dutch, with the seniors and their parents being recognized in special halftime ceremonies.
It was also a “Pink Game,” with the Lady Dutch and Lady Hubbers showing their support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month by wearing pink uniforms and socks.
Smethport got on the board first when they scored with 25:31 left in the first half.
The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch tennis team handed the Brockway Lady Rovers a 6-3 loss Wednesday afternoon in a match played at Brockway.
The Lady Dutch, now 7-5 on the year, will close out their season this afternoon as they are scheduled to travel to Bradford for a 3:30 p.m. match.
At first singles, SMA’s Rachel Walker won 6-4, 5-7, 10-5 in a third-set tiebreaker over Brittany Johnson.
At second singles, Chelsea Facchine of the Lady Rovers beat Allison Shields 6-2, 6-2.
Jamie VanAlstine of the Lady Dutch defeated Cassie Foradori 6-0, 6-3 at third singles.
The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch and the Elk County Catholic football teams both return to action Friday night. The Dutchmen will host the Union Golden Knights in their Homecoming game, while the Crusaders will travel to Curwensville for a key AML South Division contest.

Homecoming ceremonies for the Dutch will take place at halftime of this KSAC game.
The Dutchmen of coach Joe Schlimm will bring a 4-3 record into the contest.
St. Marys had defeated Clarion-Limestone 55-12, Clarion 14-7, Moniteau 46-15 and Redbank Valley 28-14.

Bruce Schreiber, son of Robert and Maria Schreiber, formerly of St. Marys, died unexpectedly Oct. 17, 2010. He was 50 years old. He was the nephew of Janet (Carl) Dippold of St. Marys.
Condolences may be sent to the Schreibers at 6302 Spar Way, Magalia, CA 95954.
DuBOIS - The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader tennis team captured the District 9 Class AA team championship Tuesday by defeating the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch by a 4-1 score in a match played at the DuBois Area High School courts.
The Lady Crusaders took the 1-0 lead when Laira Reuscher and Maria Gismondi defeated Stephanie Buerk and Kelly Dietz at second doubles, 6-4, 6-2.
“Laira and Maria got over early nerves to give us a big win,” said ECCHS coach Pete Meier.
Elk made the score 2-0 when Megan Fritz and Ally Brock won 6-0, 6-4 at first doubles over Mary Rosman and Jamie VanAlstine.
The St. Marys Area cross country teams closed out their regular season Tuesday afternoon by defeating the Brockway squads in a meet held at the SMAHS course.
The Dutchmen defeated the Rovers by a 21-38 score, while the Lady Dutch won by a 27-28 margin. The Dutch finished their dual-meet season with a 10-4 record, while the Lady Dutch finished with a 9-3 mark.
SMA’s Justin Huey and Adair Gennocro won their respective races on Senior Night for the Dutch.
The Ridgway Area Lady Elkers came up with a 3-2 victory over the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch in a volleyball match held on Tuesday evening at the Ridgway Area High School gym. Ridgway took the opening game of the best-of-five set at 25-12, with the Lady Dutch taking the second game, 26-24. The Lady Elkers came up with a 25-13 win in game three, but the Lady Dutch took game four by a 25-26 score. In the final game, the Lady Elkers won by a 15-10 score to win the match 3-2.
An Area Transportation Authority hub at the soon-to-be-constructed parking garage on Depot Street took a step closer to becoming a reality on Monday evening, when members of city council voted to approve entering into a lease agreement for the facility.

State Representative Matt Gabler, R-Elk/Clearfield, and Democratic state House candidate Frank Straub laid out their respective plans for the area during a Monday evening debate hosted by the Elk County Tea Party. The two men are vying for the state House seat in the 75th Legislative District currently occupied by Gabler. The candidates answered questions submitted by members of the Tea Party and the public at the event.
