A steady crowd gathered throughout the day on Thursday during the inaugural North Central Marcellus Gas Expo, held at the former Walmart building next to Tractor Supply in St. Marys.
According to Sally Wilson, executive director of the St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce, 160 vendors participated in the expo, with registration requests being submitted up to the day before the event.
Members of the community were excited to meet employees of Center Rock Inc. at the North Central Gas Expo held Thursday in the old Walmart building in St. Marys. Rescue workers from the Berlin, Pa.-based company helped bring 33 Chilean miners to the surface Wednesday after months of drilling and preparation of a rescue shaft at the San Jose Mine in CopiapĂł, where trapped miners spent 69 days almost a half-mile underground after an Aug. 5 collapse brought down 700,000 tons of rock.
State Rep. Matt Gabler, R-Elk/Clearfield, and Frank Straub, Democratic candidate for the 75th Legislative District in the state House, will debate and discuss their positions on issues at a
candidate forum hosted by the Elk County Tea Party. The event will take place Monday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. at the Red Fern on the Million Dollar Highway in Fox Twp. The public is welcome.

The Elk County Catholic Crusader golf team picked up a victory over St. Marys Area and Brockway Area in a match held on Wednesday afternoon at the St. Marys Country Club golf course.
"This is the best we played all season," said ECCHS Coach John Vollmer following the match. "We had two of our players shoot their best scores of the season in the match as Brandon Schlimm carded a 38 and Jess Jaynes carded a 40. Once again Darren (Simons) was the medalist for the day with his 34. Elliott Struble also came in with a great round for us as he carded a 39."
The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader tennis team edged the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch squad 5-4 in a match played at the SMAHS courts Wednesday afternoon.
At first singles, ECC’s Kylie Auman, who returned to the line-up after some time off for an illness, defeated Rachel Walker 6-1, 6-2.
At second singles, Allison Shields of the Lady Dutch came back after being down in the first set to win her match over Crystal Hanes in three sets, 3-6, 6-1, 10-6.
Loreal Housler of ECC defeated Brandi Meyer 6-2, 6-2 at third singles.
PUNXSUTAWNEY - A Petrosky had a hand in all three Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders goals Tuesday night in a 3-0 Upper Allegheny Valley Soccer League Central victory over the Punxsutawney Lady Chucks.
ECC junior Abbi Petrosky scored twice in the game. Her first goal came with 23:21 left until halftime. Freshman Michaela Cashmer had the assist. Petrosky's other tally came with 7:02 left in the contest with the assist going to senior Hanna McGowan.

Students learn about Elk Flyers Club

Damien A. Hadsell, 15, of River Road, Weedville, died unexpectedly on Monday, Oct. 11, 2010.
He was born Nov. 15, 1994, in Wellsville, NY.
He was a sophomore at St. Marys Area High School. He enjoyed writing music under the pen name of "Damz." He was born in Wellsville, NY, and raised in Bolivar, NY, and had been a Bennetts Valley resident for one-and-a-half years.

Erwin W. "Sonny" Laird, 78, of Elk Haven Nursing Home and formerly of 432 N. Michael St., St. Marys, died on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 9, 2010 at Elk Haven Nursing Home following a lengthy illness.
He was born Nov. 12, 1931 in St. Marys, a son of the late Erwin J. and Hedwig "Hattie" Kraft Laird. On Sept. 8, 1956 in St. Mary's Church, he married the late Marian Banker Laird, who preceded him in death on Oct. 6, 1991.
The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders kept their slate clean on Tuesday evening as they handed the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch volleyball team a 3-0 setback in a match held at the Aaron J. Straub Gymnasium on the Elk Catholic campus.
The Lady Crusaders won the best-of-five match 3-0 as they won the first game by a 25-17 score, then held on for a 25-22 win in the second game and took the third game by a 25-18 score.
