Jacob recognized for service to Chamber

St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce outgoing president Mark Jacob was honored for his service to the organization during the Chamber's annual dinner held Saturday.
Jennifer Dippold, a member of the Chamber's board of directors, acknowledged Jacob's efforts and presented him with a gift in gratitude for his service.
Jacob has served as the board president for the past two years and was a board member for several years prior to his presidency. He plans to remain active in the organization as a board member rather than an officer.

Elk County Catholic joins up with Pure Thirst

Students at Elk County Catholic High School recently joined forces with the organization Pure Thirst in an effort to raise funds for the building of a water purification system for the village of Las Caleras, Honduras.
Pure Thirst was recently founded by Matt Burnett, a senior at DuBois Central Catholic High School, and the organization works in conjunction with the Rice Foundation and the DuBois Rotary Club.

Sinnemahoning Watershed Grant Program rejected

Watershed specialist Kim Bonfardine announced during last night's Elk County Conservation District meeting that two grants had been rejected for the Sinnemahoning Watershed Grant Program.
The Sinnemahoning Watershed Grant Program is managed by the Headwaters RC&D Sinnemahoning Stakeholders Committee to distribute funds derived from a civil settlement between the state Department of Environmental Protection [DEP] and Norfolk Southern Railway as a result of a sodium hydroxide spill that took place on June 30, 2006 within the Sinnemahoning Watershed.

Decision pending in forest drilling appeal

A decision is pending in the appeal of a preliminary injunction that 13 months ago cleared the way for the resumption of oil and gas drilling in the Allegheny National Forest (ANF).
A panel of three judges from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit heard the appeal last Thursday in the Collins J. Seitz Courtroom in the federal courthouse in Philadelphia. Judges serving on the panel included Julio Fuentes, Michael Chagares and Jane Roth.

Stephen Bruno Iorfido

Stephen Bruno Iorfido, 87, of 522 First Ave., Johnsonburg, died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2011, at DuBois Regional Medical Center.
He was born Aug. 23, 1923 in Ridgway, the son of the late Bruno and Teresa Galatti Iorfido. On Aug. 15, 1949, he married Rose Mary Sette, who predeceased him on March 29, 2010.

Eva Helena Grotzinger

Eva Helena Grotzinger, 84, of 179 Sara Rd., St. Marys, died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2011 at the Elk Regional Health Center after a brief illness.
She was born Feb. 26, 1926 in Kersey, daughter of the late George and Anna Leismeister Auman. On Nov. 22, 1947, in the St. Boniface Church in Kersey, she married Francis J. Grotzinger, who preceded her in death on Feb. 10, 2000.

Esther J. "Eck" Bickmire

Esther J. "Eck" Bickmire, 91, a resident of the Rouse Warren County Home in Youngsville, died there Monday morning, Jan. 31, 2011 after an extended illness. 
She was born Nov. 5, 1919 in Brockport, daughter of the late Richard and Maude McManigle Brenton. On July 12, 1952 at Sacred Heart Church in St. Marys, she married Walter "Wally" Bickmire, who preceded her in death on Feb. 26, 2002.

Lady Crusaders hold off Brookville for 52-48 D9 League win

ECC travels to Sheffield tonight

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders evened their District 9 League record at 2-2 with a 52-48 victory over the Brookville Lady Raiders Saturday night at the ECCHS gym.
The Lady Crusaders controlled the first half of play when they outscored the Lady Raiders by a 30-18 margin. In the second half, Brookville outscored the Lady Crusaders by a 30-22 margin.
“This was a hard-fought game. Brookville played exceptionally well tonight. They are a well-coached team,” said ECCHS coach Ken Pistner.

Robert J. "Limpy" Redmond Sr.

Robert J. "Limpy" Redmond Sr., 78, of Dill Hill Road, Johnsonburg, died Friday, Jan. 28, 2011 at Elk Regional Health Center following a short illness.
He was born March 12, 1932 in Johnsonburg, son of Stanley and Mildred (Tarnowski) Redmond Sr.
On June 26, 1951, he married Sara (Gapinski) Redmond and she preceded him in death on Aug. 29, 2001.
He lived in Johnsonburg all his life and worked most of his life with Redmond Bros. Ready Mix Company of Ridgway, retiring in 1990.

Eleanor R. "Boogie" Byers, 84, of 7190 Ridgway-St. Marys Rd., Ridgway, died Friday afternoon, Jan. 28, 2011, at Elk Haven Nursing Home following a brief illness.
She was born Sept. 11, 1926 in Clearfield, daughter of the late John and Ruth (Ardary) Dush.
She married Maurice S. "Fats" Byers on Dec. 12, 1949, and he preceded her in death.
