Residents utilizing Community Recycling Center

Bekki Titchner, county recycling/solid waste coordinator, gave fellow members of the Elk County Solid Waste Authority a status update on the Community Recycling Center's operations since its official opening in October 2010.
She informed the authority that the first check had been received for recyclables sent out from the Community Recycling Center.
The check, for the first 13 1/2 tons of various fiber materials, was for $385.
"It was a mix of corrugated and office paper and newsprint and magazines," Titchner said. "It averages about $28 or $29 a ton across the board for that stuff."

Former Rusted Root drummer hosting local workshop

Jim Donovan, a founding member of the popular multiplatinum band Rusted Root, will be conducting the unique Drum and Chant: Transformation Workshop this evening at Soul-Full Yoga in downtown St. Marys.
Anyone, regardless of musical ability, is invited to attend the workshop, which is taking place from 7 to 9:30 p.m. inside the yoga studio, located on the second floor of 19 N. St. Marys St. Beginners are warmly welcome and drums are provided, although attendees may bring their own if they desire. There is a cost for the event.

Commission continues transition

As newly elected Pa. governor Tom Corbett continues his transition into office while seeking to "reform state government," officials at the North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission [NCPRPDC] are anxiously awaiting to see what actions the new administration will take.

ECC Alumni Spirit Night set for Feb. 11

Elk County Catholic alumni of all ages are invited to participate in the first annual ECC Alumni Spirit Night on Friday, Feb. 11.
As part of the event, alumni are encouraged to sport their alma mater's colors to the boys' basketball matchup against St. Marys Area High School, with the junior varsity game beginning at 6 p.m. and varsity game tipping off at 7:30 p.m.
To keep the spirit going after the game, a social for alumni and friends is being held at the CMF Grill Room, located at the corner of S. St. Marys and East Mill streets, starting around 9:30 p.m.

DeMott takes over chair

RIDGWAY – Joe DeMott, one of three McKean County commissioners, was voted Wednesday morning as the new chairman of the North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission's [NCPRPDC] executive committee and board of directors.
Mark McCracken, in the midst of his second term as a Clearfield County commissioner, held the chairman post for one year.
"I'm leaving the board in capable hands," McCracken said of DeMott. The outgoing chairman will continue to be part of the commission.

SMA gymnasts record fourth win of the season

The St. Marys Area gymnastics team recorded their fourth win of the season last night as they defeated the Ridgway squad by a 129.2250 to 108.7750 score at the St. Marys Area Middle School gym.
Molly Eshbach set a new school record on the vault last night with a score of 9.3500.
“The team brought it all tonight. The kids are finally hitting their beam routines and are improving on their bar routines, which is significantly making a difference in our team score,” said St. Marys coach Irene McCandless.

Crusaders top Bradford Owls 56-47 in D9 play

The Elk County Catholic Crusaders recorded a 56-47 victory over a very scrappy Bradford Area High School squad on Wednesday evening at the Aaron J. Straub Gymnasium on the Elk Catholic Campus. The game was a District Nine League encounter and upped the ECCHS record in the league to 3-1, while knocking Bradford back to 1-4.
Last night's win was also a milestone win for ECCHS Coach Aaron Straub, as it was his 639th win on the boys' level, making him the winningest coach in District Nine history.

Donations keep #5 plastics program viable

The program to recycle #5 plastics has become popular among area residents, though Elk County recycling coordinator Bekki Titchner noted that it is only because of donations that the program has remained viable. The #5 plastics are able to be dropped off throughout the week during regular operating hours at the Community Recycling Center at the Stackpole Complex.

Nancy N. Kunert

Nancy N. Kunert (nee Lowry), 78, of Cincinnati, Ohio, and formerly of Ridgway, died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2011.
She was the wife of the late David W. Kunert and the daughter of the late Dr. James and Gretchen Lowry.
She is survived by three daughters, Elizabeth Kunert, Mary (Charles) Forman, and Gretchen (the late Robert Joseph) Carle; a son, James K. (Sherry) Kunert; a sister, Susan (William) Kiggins; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Esther M. Feldbauer

Esther M. Feldbauer, 85, of Elk Towers and formerly of 178 Queens Rd., St. Marys, died on Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2011 at Cedars Hospice Center in Monroeville following a short illness.
She was born Sept. 4, 1925 in Driftwood, a daughter of the late Mark and Beatrice Winslow Blanchard.
On Jan. 3, 1943 in St. Mary's Church, she married the late Michael Feldbauer, who preceded her in death on Sept. 14, 1995.
