Thomas W. Miller, 92, formerly of Huntingdon, died at 3:10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2010, at Valley View Haven Nursing Home, Belleville, where he had most recently been a resident.
He was born March 1, 1918, in Huntingdon, son of the late William Asbury and Charlotte (Wall) Miller.

Elizabeth (Betty) Jane Gorske

Elizabeth (Betty) Jane Gorske, 67, of Johnsonburg, died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2011 at Rockdale Personal Care Home, Falls Creek.
She was born April 15, 1943, she was a daughter of the late Theresa Agnus Marie Gorske.
She was a 1961 graduate of the Johnsonburg Area High School and retiree of Osram Sylvania in St. Marys.
She is survived by a daughter, Jennifer Gorske; four grandchildren, Shaila Gorske, Dakota Gorske, Elijiah Gorske and Taylor Feronti; and two sisters, Barbara Anderson and Mary Himes.
A Memorial Mass will be held at Holy Rosary Church in Johnsonburg on Saturday at 10 a.m.

SMASD receives funding, recognized for test scores

St. Marys Area School District Superintendent Ann Kearney acknowledged the SMASD Board of School Directors during Thursday evening's workshop in observance of School Board Appreciation Month.
Students from various schools throughout the district created a large homemade book for each school board member. They also received a glass globe with a light inside, as well as a certificate from the Pennsylvania School Board Association in recognition of their service to the district.
"I hope you keep the light of knowledge going," Kearney said. "We appreciate all of your time and effort."

Woodbed Corp. facility a concern for Wilson Road residents

On Monday evening, several residents from Wilson Road came before city council to voice their side of an issue that ultimately boils down to the close proximity between the residential and industrial zones in that area of the city.

Fox supervisors address new items

The Fox Township Supervisors briefly addressed the possibility of amending the township's zoning ordinance to address windmills and gas drilling wells.
They discussed holding a work session to obtain public input on the issue.
Supervisor Randy Gradizzi said that many of the entities involved must come before the board to obtain a conditional use permit. It is at that time that the township can establish specific property setbacks.
"We need to get rolling on this. It's needed," Gradizzi said.

Lady Crusaders top Brockway Lady Rovers 42-26

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders picked up their fifth victory of the season on Wednesday evening when they defeated the Brockway Area High Lady Rovers in an AML encounter by the score of 42 to 26.
"We did a great job on the boards tonight," said ECCHS Head Coach Ken Pistner following the game. "Another factor in tonight's win was the solid minutes of play that we received from our bench players."
"Tonight we had a much better offensive flow than we have displayed in the past few games," added the coach.

Ridgway wrestlers hand Dutch 40-24 setback

The Ridgway Elkers wrestling team handed the St. Marys Area Flying Dutch squad a 40-24 setback last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
Ridgway opened a 17-0 lead, only to see the Dutch battle back to close to within 25-24. However, Ridgway won the last three matches to win the match 40-24.
“We took a couple of steps forward again tonight,” said St. Marys coach Dominic Surra. “Ridgway has been a quality team for some time, and this is just part of the growing process.
“All the kids gave good fights tonight. Their (Ridgway) experience paid off in some matches.
