Community invited to share Christmas Day Dinner

ST. MARYS - Preparations for the 17th free annual St. Marys Christmas Day Dinner are under way.
The dinner will be held beginning at 12:30 p.m. on Dec. 25 in Asbury Hall at the First United Methodist Church, 140 N. St. Marys St., St. Marys. Open to all residents of St. Marys, Fox Township and Jay Township, the dinner is held to allow community residents to spend time together. All are welcome, regardless of age, financial status, and religious denomination, according to Alice Wiesner, one of the event organizers.

Foundation provides grants to nonprofits

The Elk County Community Foundation [ECCF] distributed nearly $20,000 in grant monies to five non-profit organizations Wednesday night at Elkwood Arts at 324 Allenhurst Ave., in Ridgway.
ECCF brought together non-profit organizations that serve the residents of Ridgway who were chosen to receive a grant from the Borough of Ridgway Charitable Fund.

Kenneth W. Parks

A memorial service for Kenneth W. Parks, 97, who died Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2011, will be conducted on Saturday, Nov. 19, at 10:30 a.m. at the Anthony F. Ferragine Funeral Home, 401 Chestnut St., Johnsonburg. There will be a James W. Brown Lodge #675 F&AM service and military honors accorded by the Johnsonburg-Wilcox Servicemen's Detail following the memorial service.
It was mistakenly reported in another publication that the service had taken place on Saturday, Nov. 12.

Richard Thomas Sorg

Richard Thomas Sorg, 58, of 221 Beacon Road, St. Marys, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2011 at the Elk Regional Health Center.
He was born Nov. 5, 1953 in St. Marys, son of the late Thomas B. Sorg and Geraldine Rupprecht Sorg, who survives, of St. Marys. On Feb. 12, 1977, in the Queen of the World Church, he married Tina Mertz, who survives.
He was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of St. Marys High School, Class of 1971. For 32 years, he was employed by Lewis and Hockenberry. He also owned Richard T. Sorg Logging for 32 years.

Edith J. Bogacki

Edith J. Bogacki, 97, of Elk Haven Nursing Home, died Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2011, at her residence.
She was born Dec. 17, 1913, in Rossiter, the daughter of the late Charles and Assunta Nichademas Glasso. On Aug. 27, 1935, she married John J. Bogacki, who predeceased her on March 13, 1989.

Elizabeth Lee "Betty" Barry

Elizabeth Lee "Betty" Barry, 95, formerly of Ridgway, died Monday, Nov. 14, 2011 in Farmville, Va. 
She was born in Parsons, W.V., the daughter of the late Carl and Sara Duncan Jarvis. She married the late Charles Raymond Barry. Betty loved animals, especially cats, working in her garden and working outside. She enjoyed a simple life. Betty thrived on always giving her time to others and never asked anything in return.

Community invited to support troops during letter-stuffing party

ST. MARYS - Community members and organizations are invited to lend their support to our military personnel by volunteering at the upcoming Letters From Home (LFH) letter-stuffing party taking place on Sunday, Nov. 20 at the Sacred Heart Parish Center.
The November event is part of LFH's fall mailing entitled "Thank You From America." Sign-up for the event begins at 12:30 p.m., with package preparation starting at 1 p.m.
"The soldiers love receiving children's artwork," said Letters From Home founder Christine Jovenitti.

Antique dealers bring road show to town

ST. MARYS - The average person has $750 worth of gold in his or her their home without even knowing it, according to Jay Recher, a field manager with THR & Associates, a buyer of precious metals, coins, antiques, and collectibles, which has again brought its road show to the Comfort Inn on the Million Dollar Highway in St. Marys.
The event, open to the public, is being held in a conference room at the motel, where clients can sit down with a specialist and determine what items the company is willing to purchase from them and at what price.

Rep. Gabler reflects on Auman's military service

During his speech at American Legion Post 103's annual Veterans Day banquet on Saturday evening at Bavarian Hills, Rep. Matt Gabler (R-Clearfield/Elk) took a moment to reflect on the recent loss of World War II veteran James O. Auman, who died last Friday on Veterans Day.
Gabler explained that Auman was someone whom he always had a lot of respect for.

SMAMS teacher receives McDonald's 'MAC' grant
