Lawrence J. "Skinny" Wolfe, 90, of Pinecrest Manor, St. Marys, and formerly of 407 Blaine Ave., Johnsonburg, died Wednesday, December 14, 2011 following a lengthy illness.
He was born on April 11, 1921 in Johnsonburg, son of the late John and Susan Ruben Wolfe.
He married Christine Amacher on July 4, 1942 in Holy Rosary Church in Johnsonburg. She survives.
Pauline E. Bowers, 54, of 8 Gillouly Ave., Ridgway, died unexpectedly at her residence on Wednesday, December 14, 2011.
She was born March 30, 1957 in Ridgway, the daughter of the late Ralph and Janet Johnson Amacher. On August 7, 1976, she married Richard “Bill” Bowers, who survives.
Mrs. Bowers was a lifelong Ridgway resident. She was a member of the Faith United Church of Christ and the Women of the Moose. She had been employed at the Ridgway Eagles and the Ridgway Moose. She enjoyed crocheting and she was an assistant soccer coach at Ridgway Area High School.
JOHNSONBURG – Behind the white-hot trio of Cameron Grumley, Quinn Luhr and Cole Peterson, the Johnsonburg Rams never trailed Tuesday night in a 52-35 runaway victory over visiting Elk County Catholic.
The Rams used a quick 10-2 start to open the game and kept at least a double-digit lead since the 5:55 mark of the second quarter en route to an unblemished 2-0 start.
The Cameron County Lady Raiders used an eight-point first-half advantage to hand the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch a 50-45 loss last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
Cameron County outscored St. Marys 23-15 in the first 16 minutes of play. In the second half, the Lady Dutch outscored Cameron County 30-27 to cut Cameron County’s final margin of victory to five points.
“We changed defenses at halftime but our focus is on defensive execution,” said St. Marys coach Leona Hoohuli.
The Fox Township Supervisors approved the 2012 proposed budget with no tax increase. The budget includes $2.39 million in expenses from all funds.
No comments were received about the budget, which has been available for public review since November.
Under new business, the supervisors approved a resolution delegating authority for the collection of the Occupational Privilege Tax. This tax rate is $10 for area residents, with $5 going to the St. Marys Area School District and the remaining $5 staying in the township.
ST. MARYS - After 10 previous stops throughout the year and an enthusiastic following of more than 500 participants, the grand finale of the yearlong Straub Brewery Charity Pub Crawl is set for 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 16 at The Hills Restaurant in St. Marys.
The grand finale, expected to be the biggest stop yet, will mark the first time in Straub Brewery's 140-year history that the famed "Eternal Tap" will symbolically be taken on the road, where it will be creatively represented at The Hills.
In addition to collecting and cataloguing items related to the history of the area, the Historical Society of St. Marys and Benzinger Township also undertakes efforts to preserve and restore items that have a particular historical significance.
This effort started a few years ago when the society began to look for a way to repair a large three-foot by five-foot hand-drawn image of St. Marys and Benzinger Township that a resident had found in his attic and given to Charlie Schaut. The image, according to Bill Bauer, was in "lousy shape" when it was given to Schaut in 1964.
Arthur J. Stewart, 82, of Kenmore, N.Y., died Monday, Dec. 12, 2011.
He was the beloved husband of Josephine M. (nee Curto) Stewart; dearest father of Charles (Mary) Stewart and Sharon Stewart; devoted grandfather of Charles (Michele) and Brian (Melissa) Stewart; great-grandfather of Isaac, Natalie Grace, Haley, and Hannah; dear brother of Marlene Horm, Shirley Stewart, and Pam Schreiber; also survived by nieces and nephews.
