Charity Pub Crawl grand finale Dec. 16

ST. MARYS - After 10 previous stops throughout the year and an enthusiastic following of more than 500 participants, the grand finale of the yearlong Straub Brewery Charity Pub Crawl is set for 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 16 at The Hills Restaurant in St. Marys.
The grand finale, expected to be the biggest stop yet, will mark the first time in Straub Brewery's 140-year history that the famed "Eternal Tap" will symbolically be taken on the road, where it will be creatively represented at The Hills.

Historical society restores stations of the cross

In addition to collecting and cataloguing items related to the history of the area, the Historical Society of St. Marys and Benzinger Township also undertakes efforts to preserve and restore items that have a particular historical significance.
This effort started a few years ago when the society began to look for a way to repair a large three-foot by five-foot hand-drawn image of St. Marys and Benzinger Township that a resident had found in his attic and given to Charlie Schaut. The image, according to Bill Bauer, was in "lousy shape" when it was given to Schaut in 1964.

Arthur J. Stewart, 82, of Kenmore, N.Y., died Monday, Dec. 12, 2011.
He was the beloved husband of Josephine M. (nee Curto) Stewart; dearest father of Charles (Mary) Stewart and Sharon Stewart; devoted grandfather of Charles (Michele) and Brian (Melissa) Stewart; great-grandfather of Isaac, Natalie Grace, Haley, and Hannah; dear brother of Marlene Horm, Shirley Stewart, and Pam Schreiber; also survived by nieces and nephews.

Historical Society holds 49th annual banquet

The Historical Society of St. Marys and Benzinger Township held its 49th annual banquet on Sunday evening at the Diamond View Restaurant to commemorate the founding of Sancta Marienstadt on Dec. 8, 1842.
President and Emcee Bill Conrad opened the evening's program by asking attendees to observe a moment of silence for two recently departed board members, Jim Auman and Andrew Kaul.

Kentucky families benefit from area donations

Over 50 residents of Beattyville, Ky. benefitted from this year's "Christmas in Kentucky" program spearheaded by local teacher Laura Kuntz of St. Marys.
"It always amazes me how generous this community is, in spite of our own financial difficulties. I have done this for 16 years and it is still going strong," Kuntz said.
With what Kuntz called the "tremendous" support of the St. Marys area, "wish list" items were purchased for six families, with 50 additional individuals receiving Christmas gifts due to the kindness of local residents.

Demolition Day

Demolition of the the former Mullaney building at the corner of Center and North St. Marys streets began on Monday morning, with workers removing bricks and roofing by hand so as not to endanger any adjacent buildings or utilities before moving in with a crane to pull down the north-facing facade.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Sunday, Ken and Toie Neal began the rest of their lives without the Hotel Punxsutawney, which has been a part of their lives since 1973.
“Today was the first day (Ken) didn't get up, get a shower and say, 'I'm going to the Hotel;' that was his life,” Toie said Sunday night. “We wonder where the guys will go for lunch. His brother (Gubby) said, 'I told my wife (Candy), she'll have to start packing my lunch.'

Gregg J. "Shamu" Erich

Gregg J. "Shamu" Erich, 47, of 133 Wehler Rd., St. Marys, died on Saturday, Dec. 10, 2011 at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh following a short illness.
He was born June 28, 1964 in St. Marys, a son of John "Jack" Erich of St. Marys and the late Jean M. Vollmer Erich, his beloved mother, who preceded him in death on April 16, 2010.

Tessa Divelbliss

Tessa Divelbliss, 2, of Washington, died unexpectedly on Thursday, Dec. 8, 2011 in Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh.
She was born on March 16, 2009 in Washington, the daughter of Drew Divelbliss of Scenery Hill and Linsey (stepfather Andrew) Taylor of Washington.
Tessa had gone to Bubbles Bears to Books Daycare in Canonsburg.
She liked to play with her baby dolls, help her mom clean house, dancing and playing with her big sister.
She went to church at St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church in Canonsburg.

Helen A. Mitchell

Helen A. Mitchell, 87 of Blackberry St., Weedville, died Sunday, December 11, 2011 at DuBois Regional Medical Center.
She was born on September 7, 1924 in St. Marys, a daughter of the late Rock and Mildred (Supon) Rebic.
In 1948, she married John E. Mitchell. He preceded her in death in 1954.
She retired from Stackpole Carbon Company after many years of service.
She was a 1942 graduate of Central Christian High School in St. Marys.
She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Force and enjoyed her family, Bingo, and sports.
