Harold R. Young

January 11, 2011

Harold R. Young, age 87, of 108 Irishtown Rd., Kersey, died Monday morning, Jan. 10, 2011 at Elk Haven Nursing Home following a brief illness.
He was born Sept. 1, 1923 in Brockway, son of the late Thomas R. and Stella B. (Truesdale) Young.

Cavaliers win 2011 Conrad Reuscher Basketball Tourney

The St. Marys eighth grade Cavaliers basketball team captured the 2011 Conrad Reuscher Cavalier Basketball Tournament held over the weekend at Elk County Catholic High School. The Cavaliers defeated Blessed Sacrament of Erie in the championship game by a 32-28 score.
The Blessed Sacrament Bulldogs took second, while the St. Marys Area Flying Dutch placed third. Mt. Carmel was fourth, as they defeated DuBois Central and St. Stephen’s of Oil City.
In the Cavaliers’ first game on Friday, they defeated the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Raiders by a 46-37 score.

Supervisors make changes to health insurance coverage

During a special meeting Friday morning, the Jay Township Supervisors voted 2-1 to discontinue paying certain costs associated with the township's health insurance coverage.

Surra oversees creation of student constitution

St. Marys Area High School social studies teacher Dominic Surra presented a new student constitution to members of the St. Marys Area School District Board of School Directors during their regular meeting Monday evening.
Surra was approached by SMAHS Principal Josh Williams to work on the new program, which entailed creating a Student Government Constitution.
While the document was created by students, Surra acted as a guide throughout the process in facilitating debates and discussion brought up during the duration of the project.

Ronald L. Chapin

Ronald L. Chapin, 73 , of 465 Marvin St., Wilcox, died on Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011 at Elk Regional Health Center following a brief illness.
He was born on Nov. 21, 1937 in Kansas City, Kan., son of the late Charles D. and Ruby I. Woodcock Chapin.
He married V. Louise "Lou" Lehman on July 16, 1994 in the Wilcox Lutheran Church. She survives.
He resided in Wilcox for the past 18 years and was formerly of McPherson, KS. He graduated from McPherson High School in 1955.

Cynthia M. "Cindy" Rupprecht

Cynthia M. "Cindy" Rupprecht of 621 Maurus St., St. Marys, died on Saturday, January 8, 2011 at Elk Regional Health Center following a lengthy illness.
She was born in St. Marys, a daughter of Thomas Rupprecht of St. Marys and the late Judith Munn Rupprecht, who preceded her in death on July 16, 2006.

Patricia A. Mitchell

Patricia A. Mitchell, 71, of 121 Powell St., Ridgway, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2011, at her residence.
She was born Sept. 19, 1939, in Ridgway, the daughter of Harold and Mary Cianca Russell.
She married Samuel Mitchell, who predeceased her on Oct. 15, 1996.
Mrs. Mitchell was a lifelong Ridgway resident. She was a member of St. Leo’s Catholic Church. She enjoyed crafts and talking with people. She was employed at Clarion Sinitered Metals, retiring in 2001.

Edith "Pete" M. Werner Knoll

Edith "Pete" M. Werner Knoll, 91, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011 at Rochester General Hospital in Rochester, N.Y. after a brief illness.
She was born in St. Marys on Jan. 3, 1920, a daughter of the late Arthur A. and Edith Mary Kaul Werner.
She married Edmund "Lee" Mellitus Knoll on July 4, 1946. He preceded her in death.

Jane E. Gausman

Jane E. Gausman, 59, of 872 Brusselles St., St. Marys, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2011 at the Life Care Hospital in Pittsburgh after a lengthy illness.
She was born June 4, 1951 in Genesee, daughter of the late Earl and Leota Holt Truax.
On July 4, 1971, in Genesee, she married Joseph R. Gausman, who survives.
She was a graduate of Northern Potter High School, Class of 1971. She had been a resident of St. Marys for the past 41 years.

SMA Quarterback Club holds football awards banquet

The 53rd St. Marys Area Quarterback Club Football Awards Banquet was held Saturday night at the St. Marys Area High School.
The banquet is held to recognize the members of the St. Marys Area High School Flying Dutch football program, including players, coaches and cheerleaders.
The dinner was held in the school cafeteria, followed by the awards portion of the evening, which was held in Carpin Auditorium.
Terry Straub, acting as master of ceremonies for the evening, welcomed everyone to the awards portion of the night.
