Elk Regional Health Center remains on target in regard to mortality and re-admission rates, according to a recently released report issued by the Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council (PHC4). The report examines hospital outcomes for the previous calendar year.
The Elk County Commissioners announced during Tuesday morning's meeting that they will be placing a 20-gallon soup kettle up for donation.
“It is not the conventional kettle,” said commissioner Dan Freeburg. “It's a free-standing unit with a gas burner beneath it; it's a self-heating unit like you would see in an industrial kitchen and it had a value of over $2,000 when it was new and it actually has not been used at all, maybe one time.”
The soup kettle has been stored in the Elk County Prison for a number of years and was at one time put up for bid.
Arthur G. Weber, 85, of St. Marys, died Saturday, Dec. 25, 2010 at the Erie Veterans Hospital after a short illness.
He was born April 21, 1925 in St. Marys, son of the late Michael and Anna (Birner) Weber.
On Aug. 10, 1963, he married Shirley Wehler, who preceded him in death on Nov. 22, 2000.
He lived all his life in St. Marys, spending the past year with his daughter in Ridgway. He worked at Stackpole Carbon Co. for 36 years, retiring in 1983. He was a member of Queen of the World Catholic Church.

State Rep. Matt Gabler, R-Elk/Clearfield, was sworn in for his second term representing the 75th Legislative District in the state House at a ceremony held at the Capitol Tuesday.
Gabler, who was re-elected by a significant majority in the November election, said he will continue to focus on fiscal accountability and smart government spending as legislative priorities during his sophomore term.
"What I think is that there's an opportunity to use the money we have more efficiently," Gabler said. "It's got to be a question of priorities."
For state Rep. Matt Gabler, the past two years have been educational, interesting, and sometimes frustrating.
During his first term representing the 75th Legislative District in the state House, the 27-year-old Republican said he learned a great deal about representing the people who elected him.
"When an individual citizen speaks, you just represent yourself. When a legislator speaks, he has to do a lot more research because he represents so many people. I think that's what makes this job so fascinating," Gabler said.
The Elk County Commissioners announced during yesterday morning's meeting that they had recently attended a meeting with state Sen. Joseph Scarnati, state Rep. Matt Gabler, and the new Speaker of the House, state Rep. Sam Smith, at Scarnati's office in Brockway.
The Jay Township Supervisors voted to eliminate the township's roadmaster position during their reorganizational meeting on Monday evening. The position was previously held by supervisor Murray Lilley.
Neither of Lilley's fellow supervisors, Francis Gustafson or Jeremy Rippey, made any motion to reappoint Lilley or name another individual to the position. Rippey later made a motion to eliminate the position altogether, which was seconded by Gustafson. Lilley opposed the motion.
Fox Township Supervisor Dave Mattiuz introduced a resolution to create a draft finance and budget ordinance which will establish specific budget guidelines when allocating money from the Landfill Host Fee Fund.
The board approved Mattiuz's motion.
"I think this discussion is necessary," said Supervisor Chairman Mike Keller. "I thought it was a good idea 12 years ago. We should make sure the numbers are right before we are locked into anything. This is exactly where we ought to go."
The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch basketball team stayed perfect on the season as they defeated the Brookville Lady Raiders by a 63-39 score last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
The Lady Dutch were able to break a close game open when midway through the second period and into the third period, they went on an 11-0 run, raising their lead from 19-17 to 30-17 before Brookville scored with 6:03 left in the third period.
The Lady Dutch outscored the Lady Raiders by a 39-22 margin in the final 16 minutes of play.
The St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen pulled off a big upset on Tuesday evening as they handed the Brookville Area High Raiders their first setback of the season by a 55-45 score in a District Nine League encounter at the Brookville gym.
"We played a complete game tonight," said Mark Guido, head coach of the St. Marys Flying Dutch. "It was very gratifying to see the fruits of labor that the squad has been putting forth tonight."
