Dutch wrestlers rally to beat Redbank Valley 30-29

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch wrestling squad rallied to defeat the Redbank Valley Bulldogs by a 30-29 score last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
The Dutch were trailing 29-12 with three matches remaining. At 171 pounds, Dutchman Kyle Wolfel pinned Matt Hetrick at the 2:51 mark, cutting the Bulldogs’ lead to 29-18. At 189 pounds, Dutchman Joe McLaughlin pinned Corey Cyphert at the 2:16 mark of their match to make the score 29-24. At 215 pounds, SMA’s Jimmy Antonelli pinned Braden Bowser at the 3:38 mark of their match, giving the Dutch the 30-29 win.

Bradford Lady Owls hand Lady Crusaders 35-30 setback

The Bradford Area High Lady Owls used the foul line to hand the Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders a 35-30 setback in a District Nine League game played at the Aaron J. Straub Gym on the Elk Catholic Campus on Tuesday evening. The Lady Owls were outscored from the field 27 to 20, but used a 15-for-22 night at the foul line to pull out a five-point victory over the Lady Crusaders.

Carl W. Wildfire

Carl W. Wildfire, 83, of 114 Cherry Rd., Kersey, died Tuesday morning, Feb. 15, 2011 at the Elk Regional Health Center after an illness of the past year.
He was born Sept. 30, 1927 in Kersey, son of the late Alois and Charlotte Benson Wildfire. In February 1952, in the St. Boniface Church, he married Elizabeth “Betty” L. Woodley, who survives.
He was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of Kersey High School, Class of 1944. He was a retired employee of the Stackpole Carbon Co., retiring in 1987 after over 45 years of service.

Herbert Jacob Himes

Herbert Jacob Himes, 79, died Monday, Feb. 14, 2011 at Hospice of Union County in Monroe, N.C.
He was born in Brockport, son of the late Jacob Silas and Laura Mae Yale Himes. 
He served his country with the United States Army and  was a retired automobile technician and a member of the American Legion. Mr. Himes enjoyed his family, the mountains and was an avid NASCAR fan. He was of the Methodist faith.

Clarence G. "Butch" Gausman

Clarence G. "Butch" Gausman, 92, of Elk Haven Nursing Home and formerly of 276 N. St. Marys St., St. Marys, died Monday, Feb. 14, 2011 at Elk Haven Nursing Home following a lengthy illness.
He was born July 21, 1918 in St. Marys, a son of the late Fred and Margaret Krug Gausman.
Mr. Gausman was a member of St. Mary's Church. He served in the Army during World War II from 1944 until 1946. He retired from Speer Carbon Company after more than 40 years of service. He enjoyed watching sports on television.

Area codes under fire

RIDGWAY – Possible changes to the local telephone area code system were the focal point of discussions Tuesday during an Elk County Board of Commissioners meeting.
John Balliet, director of Taxpayers United for Representation Now [TURN] from DuBois, discussed the proposed new 582 area code being suggested by the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission [PUC].

City looking into drilling ordinance

As gas and oil drilling becomes more prevalent throughout the area, municipalities are making the necessary efforts to attempt to ensure that their natural resources are protected. The City of St. Marys is no exception, and on Tuesday evening members of city council and the planning commission held a joint meeting to discuss the best way to move forward implementing oil and gas drilling restrictions within the city.

Flu hitting area late in season

During the past week, a late-season run of the influenza virus has occurred in St. Marys and surrounding communities. Dr. David Caruso, a local physician, said the virus usually makes an appearance earlier during the fall and winter months.
"Other states have had it - PA is just later this year getting it," said Caruso.

School board re-bids flooring project

Among the various business items recently approved by the St. Marys Area School District School Board was the re-bidding of the rubber flooring project for the St. Marys Area High School and South St. Marys Street Elementary School hallways.
Three companies submitted bids, all of which were rejected. The bids were from Faris Carpet, Inc. in Uniontown; Aramark, based in Philadelphia; and CB Flooring in Harrisburg.

Business expo expands activities, vendors

Organizers are gearing up for the 2011 Business Expo, slated for Saturday at the Red Fern from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Once again, the St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce and The River 98.9 radio station are teaming up to sponsor the expo.
"Last year we had 40 vendors and have added even more this year," said co-organizer John Salter of The River 98.9. "This year we have a variety of businesses and organizations from around the region."
