Jason C. Pontious, 41, of 162 Cuneo Rd., Kersey, died unexpectedly on Sunday, Feb. 6, 2011 in Ft. Myers, Fla., where he had resided the past three months.
He was born July 23, 1969, in St. Marys, son of Irvin Pontious of Pearce, Ariz. and Karen Fritz Pontious of Kersey. He was a lifelong resident of the area and attended St. Marys Area High School and machinist school in Ridgway. He was a former employee of Quala-Die, Inc.
Judith L. Buehler, 72, of 3627 Montmorenci Rd., Ridgway, died peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Monday, Feb. 7, 2011 following a lengthy illness.
She was born on April 13, 1938, in Ridgway, daughter of the late LeRoy and Verna (Anderson) Johnson.
She married James F. Buehler on June 18, 1955. He preceded her in death on June 30, 2008.
ST. MARYS - The St. Marys Area swim teams hosted the Central Mountain squads last night at the SMAHS natatorium.
The Dutchmen came away with a 102-59 victory which improved their record to 6-1, while the Lady Dutch won 93-73 and are now 4-3 for the season.
The St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen celebrated Senior Players Night by recording a 52-47 victory over the visiting Punxsutawney Chucks in a District Nine League game held at the Dutch Oven at St. Marys Area High School.
"This was a big win for us, especially coming off the tough loss on Monday night at Bradford," said Coach Mark Guido of the Flying Dutch. "We wanted this to be a special night for our seniors, as they were honored in the pre-game ceremony, then came out and played a great ball game.
The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch basketball team raised their record to 17-1 overall with a 63-48 victory over the Punxsutawney Lady Chucks last night at Punxsy.
The Lady Dutch took charge early as they outscored Punxsy by a 20-6 margin in the first eight minutes of play. They led 36-17 at the half.
â€śI thought we played pretty well defensively in the first half and Mandy Gerarge played well defensively against Punxsyâ€™s center, Shawnna Crago,â€ť said St. Marys coach Bob Swanson.
The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader basketball team raised their District 9 League record to 5-2 with a 41-24 victory over the Punxsutawney Lady Chucks last night at Punxsutawney.
The Lady Crusaders were able to take a 23-13 lead at the half. In the second half, Elk Catholic outscored their hosts by an 18-11 margin to come out on top 41-24.
â€śWe had very good interior defense tonight,â€ť said ECCHS Coach Ken Pistner. â€śWe protected the ball well tonight, as we only committed 12 turnovers.
â€śWe also had a balanced scoring attack.â€ť
The Bradford Owls handed the St. Marys Area Flying Dutch basketball team a 51-47 District 9 League setback last night at Bradford Area High School.
The game was tied at 37 after three quarters of play. In the final eight minutes, the Owls outscored the Dutchmen 14-10 to win the game.
â€śIt was a bad night all the way around,â€ť said Dutch coach Mark Guido.
â€śWe didnâ€™t convert our free throws,â€ť he said, noting that his team was five of 15 from the charity stripe.
â€śThey (Bradford) did a nice job of shutting down our scorers,â€ť added Guido.
Members of city council unanimously approved the passage of Resolution 11-2 during their Monday evening meeting. The resolution expresses the city's opposition to a newly enacted, state-approved PennDOT policy that places the burden associated with the coordination and application for Highway Occupancy Permits relating to stormwater modifications, construction and liabilities in Commonwealth right-of-ways on the municipality instead of on PennDOT.
Under unfinished business for the Fox Township Supervisors at their recent meeting, a motion was approved to accept a draft for the advertisement of formally establishing the Toby Water Board. The board is seeking new members to serve on it. Interested volunteers should contact the township office to submit their names. Current Toby Water board members will continue to serve on the board.
Edward C. Schaut, 78, of Macedonia, Ohio, and formerly of St. Marys, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2011 in Cleveland, Ohio following a short illness.
He was the son of the late Romayne and Mildred Schaut of St. Marys.
He married the former Barbara Metrovich of Daguscahonda, who survives.
Also surviving are three daughters, Valarie (Mats) Erikson, Dr. Vivian (John) Peterson, and Jeanne Ralston; five grandchildren, Tara, Mira and Uma Erikson, Chelsea and Marcus Ralston; three sisters, Tessie Schlimm of St. Marys, Sister Romayne Schaut OSB of Bristow, Va; and Gertie (Jim) Caruso of St. Marys.
