Clarence G. "Butch" Gausman

Clarence G. "Butch" Gausman, 92, of Elk Haven Nursing Home and formerly of 276 N. St. Marys St., St. Marys, died Monday, Feb. 14, 2011 at Elk Haven Nursing Home following a lengthy illness.
He was born July 21, 1918 in St. Marys, a son of the late Fred and Margaret Krug Gausman.
Mr. Gausman was a member of St. Mary's Church. He served in the Army during World War II from 1944 until 1946. He retired from Speer Carbon Company after more than 40 years of service. He enjoyed watching sports on television.

Area codes under fire

RIDGWAY – Possible changes to the local telephone area code system were the focal point of discussions Tuesday during an Elk County Board of Commissioners meeting.
John Balliet, director of Taxpayers United for Representation Now [TURN] from DuBois, discussed the proposed new 582 area code being suggested by the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission [PUC].

City looking into drilling ordinance

As gas and oil drilling becomes more prevalent throughout the area, municipalities are making the necessary efforts to attempt to ensure that their natural resources are protected. The City of St. Marys is no exception, and on Tuesday evening members of city council and the planning commission held a joint meeting to discuss the best way to move forward implementing oil and gas drilling restrictions within the city.

Flu hitting area late in season

During the past week, a late-season run of the influenza virus has occurred in St. Marys and surrounding communities. Dr. David Caruso, a local physician, said the virus usually makes an appearance earlier during the fall and winter months.
"Other states have had it - PA is just later this year getting it," said Caruso.

School board re-bids flooring project

Among the various business items recently approved by the St. Marys Area School District School Board was the re-bidding of the rubber flooring project for the St. Marys Area High School and South St. Marys Street Elementary School hallways.
Three companies submitted bids, all of which were rejected. The bids were from Faris Carpet, Inc. in Uniontown; Aramark, based in Philadelphia; and CB Flooring in Harrisburg.

Business expo expands activities, vendors

Organizers are gearing up for the 2011 Business Expo, slated for Saturday at the Red Fern from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Once again, the St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce and The River 98.9 radio station are teaming up to sponsor the expo.
"Last year we had 40 vendors and have added even more this year," said co-organizer John Salter of The River 98.9. "This year we have a variety of businesses and organizations from around the region."

Crusaders beat Brookville Raiders 69-59

The Elk Catholic Crusaders basketball team came up with a big victory last evening at the Aaron J. Straub Gymnasium, defeating the Brookville Raiders by a 69-59 score to avenge a loss suffered at Brookville last week. The win was also big for the Crusaders, as they needed to win to earn a high seed in the upcoming District Nine Class A playoffs.
"We beat a very good Brookville squad tonight," said Coach Aaron Straub of the Crusaders. "We played very well tonight, as we put four good quarters of basketball together."

Flying Dutchmen defeat Clearfield Bisons 42-34

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen defeated the Clearfield Bisons by a 42-38 score last night in a non-league game played at the Clearfield Area High School in Hyde.
The game was very close through three quarters of play as the Dutch held a slim 27-24 lead after the third period. The game was tied at 18 at the half.
“We struggled with their zone in the first half then took charge in the second half,” said St. Marys coach Mark Guido.

SMASD presents anticipated revenues

With a new governor comes a new state budget and new concerns over funding for school districts across the Commonwealth. It has been reported that Governor Tom Corbett plans to cut $1 billion in state money for public schools for the 2011-12 budget.
St. Marys Area School District Superintendent Ann Kearney said she is anticipating deep cuts in education with the new state budget, and adding to that concern is uncertainty over the availability of federal program monies.
At a recent school board workshop, Kearney presented information on SMASD's anticipated revenues for the 2011-12 budget.

Clearfield swim teams sweep St. Marys Area squads

ST. MARYS - The senior members of the St. Marys Area High School Swim and Dive Team were honored last night at the last final dual meet of the season. The visiting Clearfield Bisons and Lady Bisons were victorious over the home squads, but the evening was highlighted by some personal bests and closely contested races.
The Dutchmen dropped only their second meet of the season with a final score of 110-76, while the Lady Dutch lost by a similar margin with the outcome of 111-74. With one meet remaining, the record stands at 7-2 for the boys and 4-5 for the girls.
