When it was his turn to address the attendees at the St. Marys Servicemen's Detail's annual banquet on Saturday Evening, Sergeant in Charge Tom Price began by announcing that he was about to do something that he had wanted to do for a long time, honor World War II Purple Heart veterans.
"These people are like ghosts in the wind. You don't know who they are. They might be your neighbor. They might be your friend down the street. The only time you read about them is when they die and they have an obituary in the paper," Price said.
Mae C. Bradshaw, 91, of 123 Bradley Rd., Centre Hall, and a former St. Marys area resident, died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2011 at her residence after a brief illness.
She was born Oct. 22, 1919 in Wakefield, Mich., daughter of the late Edward and Catherine McDonald Vaughn. On Nov. 30, 1940, in Detroit, she married Elmo F. Bradshaw II, who preceded her in death on May 23, 1967.
Catherine Mary (Verbeck) Piccirillo, 96, a resident of Pinecrest Manor in St. Marys (formerly of Ridgway), died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011.
She was born March 5, 1914 in Medix Run, Benezette Township, the daughter of Adiel and Mary (Lynch) Verbeck.
At an early age she moved to Ridgway with her family. On Jan. 5, 1931 she married Clyde Piccirillo, who preceded her in death on Jan. 26, 1977.
Carl G. Lecker, 56, of 160 Averyville Rd., St. Marys, died on Saturday evening, Feb. 12, 2011 at Elk Regional Health Center following a brief illness.
He was born Sept. 4, 1954 in St. Marys, a son of the late Albert J. and Naomi Halpin Lecker.
On Nov. 26, 1977 in St. Mary's Church, he married Stephanie Eckert Lecker, who survives.
Albert Louis Covac, 93, of 116 Poplar Rd., St. Marys, died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011 at the Elk Haven Nursing Home after an illness of the past several months.
He was born Jan. 4, 1918, in Falls Creek, son of the late Joseph and Frances (Mary) Marn Covac.
On Aug. 10, 1940, in the Holy Rosary Church in Johnsonburg, he married Irene G. Mackcoviak, who survives.
He was a lifelong resident of the area and attended St. Marys parochial schools. He was also a member of the Queen of the World Church.
As the guest speaker at this year's St. Marys Servicemen's Detail banquet, retired Brig. General Murray Neeper began by remarking that, as a community member, he greatly appreciates the services provided by the St. Marys Servicemen's Detail, as well as the other veterans' organizations throughout St. Marys and Elk County.
The Saturday closest to Valentine's Day has had a special meaning for the residents of Pinecrest for the past several years, as it has been the day when Confirmation students from St. Marys Area High School and Elk County Catholic High School have held their annual Valentine's Day Ball at the facility.
This year's event was held Saturday afternoon from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. and was attended by over 60 residents of the facility. Around 40 Confirmation students from both high schools assisted with the event.
Members of the St. Marys Servicemen's Detail held their annual banquet on Saturday evening at the Bavarian Hills Restaurant, with Detail President Joe Rigard acting as master of ceremonies for the event.
Rigard explained that the Detail was first organized in 1952 and noted that two charter members were in attendance at this year's banquet, Paul Jesberger and Herb Straub.
The Lady Dutch basketball team of the St. Marys Area High School recorded their 19th victory of the season on Saturday evening at the SMAHS Dutch Oven, defeating the Lady Crusaders of Elk County Catholic by a 62-42 score. This marked the third time this season the Lady Dutch came out on top against the Lady Crusaders.
The St. Marys Area gymnastics squad recorded a 128.900-106.525 victory over the DuBois Area gymnasts on Saturday at a meet held at the St. Marys Area Middle School gym.
Molly Eshbach set a new school record in the vault competition with her score of 9.425.
"This was the last home meet and regular meet of the season and our senior gymnasts were recognized: Molly Eshbach, Bobbi Fox, Justin Huey and Megan Longhi," said Irene McCandless, head coach of the St. Marys squad. "We had a real good day. For the most part, the kids hit their routines beautifully.
