April 5th
This week marks Community Banking Week at the city's three Northwest Savings Bank locations. The event runs from April 4 through 8 and features unique activities and giveaways at each of the offices.
Vernice L. Yazowski, 88, of Elk Haven Nursing Home, St. Marys, and formerly of 401 Alder St., Olean, N.Y., died on Sunday, April 3, 2011 at Elk Haven Nursing Home following a lengthy illness.
She was born March 29, 1923 in Walton, N.Y., a daughter of the late Carl D. and Katharine Bullis Sprague. In Walton, N.Y., she married the late Roy W. Hood, who preceded her in death.
Mrs. Yazowski was an active member of the Olean Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Olean, N.Y. She enjoyed flowers and sewing.

During Monday evening's St. Marys City Council meeting, City Councilman Dick Dornisch indicated that there needs to be a clearer interpretation of the Home Rule Charter regarding the length of time a former council member must sit out before once again seeking election to the board. He specifically called into question candidate Tom Farley's ability to be listed on the primary ballot, since Farley had served two consecutive terms and has only sat out since his last term ended at the end of 2009.
The Footlighters of Elk County explore the family road trip and the memories of youth in their latest production, "Leaving Iowa," which will be performed April 7, 8 and 9 at the Diamond View Restaurant in St. Marys.
Thomas C. Launer, 57, of 5236 Ridgway-Johnsonburg Rd., Johnsonburg, died Sunday evening, April 3, 2011 at Elk Regional Health Center in St. Marys.
He was born Oct. 2, 1953, in Ridgway, son of Kenneth E. and the late Naomi Huckabone Launer.
On Aug. 16, 1975 in Holy Rosary Church, he married Gail F. Franco, who survives.
He resided in Johnsonburg all his life. He graduated from Johnsonburg High School in 1971 and Penn State University in 1977.

ALTOONA - Two first places and a meet record by Elk County Catholic senior Megan Dornisch were the headlines as the ECCHS track and field teams competed at the 36th annual Igloo Invitational held in Altoona on Saturday.
The 2010 state champion thrower continued her string of first -place finishes by placing first in the shot put with a meet record 41’ 9” throw. Dornisch also picked up a first place in the discus event with a throw of 127’ 0”.
The St. Marys Area Ambulance Service's annual membership drive is under way and will continue throughout the month of April. Funds raised by the drive benefit the association and are used for the upkeep and purchase of new equipment.
According to Robert "Bert" Sorg, manager, the Ambulance Service currently has around 3,000 members, though he noted that the number has steadily declined over the years.
"We need people to take an interest and join the Ambulance Association," Sorg said.
The St. Marys Public Library recently received a much-needed grant in the amount of $1,100 from the Elk County Community Foundation (ECCF). The grant will be utilized to fund the library's popular Summer Reading Program.
Most Reverend Donald W. Trautman, STD, SSL, Bishop of Erie and Right Reverend Douglas Nowicki, O.S.B., Archabbot of St. Vincent Archabbey, presided over a ceremony held at Queen of the World Church to confirm 104 students and adults from Queen of the World, Sacred Heart and St. Mary's parishes as adult members of the Catholic Church.

At a hearing Friday morning at the Elk County Courthouse, President Judge Richard A. Masson heard arguments on whether alleged arsonist Philip Bradley Wolfel was competent to stand trial.
Wolfel, age 22, of 5448 Rasselas Rd., Wilcox, is charged with setting a fire at a house previously located at 204 Depot St. in Ridgway on Aug. 12, 2010.
