Housing Expo enjoys strong turnout

Cameron and Elk Counties Local Housing Options Team [LHOT] received a strong turnout Thursday afternoon at the 2011 Housing Expo held at the Central Hose Company along North Broad Street in downtown Ridgway.
The expo showcased 32 local vendors ranging from contractors, insurance agencies, banks, children's services, government offices and senior services to realtors and suppliers of home furnishings.

Norma J. Whalon

Norma J. Whalon, 84, of Elk Haven Nursing Home, and formerly of 110 Wehler Rd. in St. Marys, where she made her home with her daughter, died Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at Elk Haven Nursing Home.
She was born Aug. 20, 1926 in Independence, Kansas, a daughter of the late Walter Raymond and Hazel P. Thomas Bryant
She was married to the late Robert Copello, who preceded her in death in 1976. She was later married to Lawrence Whalon. 
Mrs. Whalon had always enjoyed reading.

SMA track and field teams open dual season at Punxsy

The St. Marys Area track and field teams opened their dual meet season Tuesday by traveling to Punxsutawney.
The Punxsy squads swept the St. Marys Area teams. The Chucks beat the Dutch by a 91-59 score, while the Lady Chucks downed the Lady Dutch 95-55.
For the Dutchmen, Brian Merritt was a double winner, as he won the 400 and 200 dashes.
Single winners for the Dutch were Jonathan Prechtl in the 100 hurdles, Gideon Woelfel in the 3200 run, Tyler Mancuso in the pole vault and Jimmy Werner in the discus.

St. Boniface Students hold Music Fest

Students at St. Boniface School held a Music Fest on Wednesday evening to celebrate the school's 125th anniversary, which was in February 2010. The program featured students in kindergarten through fifth grade reading brief summaries about the school's history and performing songs from select time periods. It got under way at 6:30 p.m. and was followed by a brief social.

SMAHS honors academic excellence

St. Marys Area High School recognized the academic excellence of juniors and seniors as part of the school's annual National Honor Society (NHS) program on Wednesday evening.
Among those honored were 43 first-year junior members, 35 second-year senior members and two seniors who were first-year members.
The evening began with a dinner, during which SMAHS senior Rebecca Arnold gave the invocation.
Students and their families then gathered inside the SMAHS Carpin Auditorium for the initiation ceremony into the Dr. Walter Black Chapter of the National Honor Society.

Demolition along Osterhout Street to begin April 2012

Construction for the Osterhout Bypass along Osterhout Street (state Route 1014) is scheduled to begin in April 2012.
The Osterhout Bypass is designed to steer heavy truck traffic off of Main Street in downtown Ridgway.
“The homes have received an assessment and some, I believe, have received their payment from PennDOT,” said Main Street Manager Michelle Bogacki during Tuesday's Ridgway Township Supervisors meeting. “They will be leaving their homes and then they will be demolished.”

Ridgway Triathlon nears

This year marks the 30th year of the Ridgway Triathlon and officials are working to make this event the best one yet.
"This unique triathlon event combines three different competitive events into one of the most fun adventures of the area," said Mary Lynne Bellotti, executive director of the Ridgway YMCA. "Canoeing is not an event usually associated with triathlons across the country but the proximity of the Clarion River gave Dave Love, founder of the event 30 years ago, an idea to combine canoeing with the traditional events of running and biking to form this unique time-tested event."

Kane Hardwood manager addresses Women in Timber

Connie Grenz, who is believed to be the first female to head a major wood-related business in the U.S., spoke Wednesday at the 13th annual Women in Timber Luncheon at the Kane Country Club.
Grenz is retiring at the end of the month after serving as general manager at Kane Hardwood for the past 11 years.
In moving from Kane back to her hometown of Vancouver, Wash., Grenz said she will be leaving "an incredible industry." She said she also will miss the people she has worked with and the friends she has made.
"It always falls down to people," Grenz said.

Rita Hanes Wendel

Rita Hanes Wendel, 79, of Anaheim, Calif., died Sunday, April 10, 2011 after a lengthy illness.
She was born May 20, 1931, in St. Marys, the daughter of the late Floyd and Barbara Hanes.
On June 23, 1956 in St. Marys, she married Raymond "Bud" Wendel, who preceded her in death in March 2007.
She attended Catholic schools in St. Marys. She enjoyed traveling and playing cards with friends and family.

Alex J. Skraba

Alex J. Skraba, 78, of 355 Dewey Circle, Ridgway, died peacefully at his residence on Tuesday, April 12, 2011.
He was born Dec. 19, 1932, in DuBois, the son of the late Samuel and Anna Radzek Skraba.
On June 9, 1956, he married Helen C. Bienkowski, who survives.
