Douglas P. Smith, 53, of 3005 Rt. 219, Brockway, died Friday, May 20, 2011 at the Snyder Memorial Health Care in Marienville following a lengthy illness.
He was born June 4, 1957, in DuBois, son of the late Jesse F. Smith and Margaret K. Dorworth Smith Simbeck of St. Marys, who survives.
He was a lifelong resident of the area and attended Ridgway schools. He was a former employee of Motion Control in Ridgway. He enjoyed fishing and raising birds.

Lilley contests absentee ballots

Tensions were high at the Jay Township Supervisor's meeting on Thursday evening when it was revealed that Supervisor Murray Lilley contested five absentee ballots filed in Tuesday's primary election.
The issue was first brought up during the visitor's comments portion of the meeting by township resident Jim Huff.
"I think it's a d--- shame what's going on with this voting deal here with him, these absentee ballots. I understand that [Lilley] was contesting elderly people, people that are in the service," Huff said.

St. Marys Little League Softball receives grant

In conjunction with the kickoff of their season this morning, the St. Marys Girls' Softball Little League also recently received a $15,000 grant to provide much-needed repairs to the Benzinger Park softball fields where their games take place.
The league plans to use the funding to replace the backstops on each field. This decision was made due to concerns over the players' safety.

Maletto wins home makeover contest

Jan Maletto of Ridgway has won the $10,000 Home Makeover Sweepstakes sponsored by Northwest Savings Bank.
Local bank officials presented her with her award in the office of Kevin Oknefski, manager of the bank's Ridgway office, with Don Valone, district manager of Northwest Savings bank, also present.
Agents employed at the local bank drew Maletto's name from over 25,000 submitted entries at community home shows and Northwest's community banking locations across Pennsylvania, Ohio and Maryland, according to Dorothy Lobdell, senior vice president of retail lending at Northwest Savings Bank.

SMA’s Schreiber, Woelfel win 9-AAA titles

BROOKVILLE - Two members of the St. Marys Area Flying Dutch track and field team captured their respective District 9 track and field championship Thursday at the D9-AAA track and field championships held at Brookville Area High School.
Trenton Schreiber and Gideon Woelfel will advance to the PIAA Class AAA track and field championship scheduled for May 26, 27 and 28 at Shippensburg University. Also advancing will be Brian Merritt.

Lady Dutch take doubleheader from Bradford Area

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch softball team picked up two victories on Thursday afternoon at the St. Marys Area softball field as they took a doubleheader from the visiting Bradford Lady Owls. The Lady Dutch took the opening game by an 11-0 score in five innings, then won the nightcap by a 19-0 score in three innings.

Crusaders down Cardinals 17-1

The Elk County Catholic Crusaders downed the DuBois Central Catholic Cardinals 17-1 in four innings on Tuesday afternoon at Berwind Park, winning the game on a walk-off double by Ben Daghir.
Pat Brennen went the distance for the Crusaders, working all four innings and giving up one hit, walking four, and striking out five.
"I thought Pat pitched a pretty reasonable game. He pitched pretty well for four innings. We just got some breaks and took advantage of them. We got some runs across the board," said ECCHS coach Fr. Eric Vogt.
