Fox Supervisors amend parking lot project

June 2, 2011

KERSEY - The Fox Township Supervisors discussed modifications to the CDBG (Community Development Block Grant) pertaining to an addition to the Fox Township Senior Center parking lot.
Township secretary Kathie Dowie explained the township was awarded a $68,000 CDBG grant for the project in 2009 which would include paving of a lower lot behind the center, as well as installation of lights and a flight of stairs connecting the lower parking lot to the upper lot which leads to the center.

Shriners conducting annual fundraiser

Once again the Pennsylvania Shrine Association is conducting its Hospital Crusade on Friday and Saturday in the area. The crusade benefits Shriners Hospitals for Children, specifically hospitals located in Erie and Philadelphia.
Local Shriners will be collecting donations on both days from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at both entrances of Wal-Mart in Fox Twp.; at Save-A-Lot grocery store on Brusselles Street in St. Marys; and at DeLullo's grocery store in Weedville.

Heroes of Air Power honored

MT. ZION – When Lt. Gen. Bruce Wright, USAF Ret., took the podium to address the crowd at the fifth annual Memorial Day dedication ceremony at Mt. Zion Historic Park on Saturday afternoon, he asked attendees to imagine that it was currently May of 1942.

Annual Strawberry Festival nears

The Elk County Historical Society will be hosting its annual Strawberry Festival on Friday, June 17 from 5-8 p.m.
The festival will be held along Center Street between Elk and Vine streets in Ridgway.
Upon arrival, participants will be given a strawberry shortcake with biscuits made fresh from Joey's Bakery; the strawberries will be provided by Valley Farm Market in Weedville.
“They are grown and picked fresh the day before,” said society director Mary Kalinowski. “And it's a very generous portion of strawberry shortcake with ice cream and whipped cream.”

ECCHS co-valedictorians recollect high school journey

Elk County Catholic High School Class of 2011 co-valedictorians Kylie Auman and Michelle Pistner addressed their classmates for the final time on Sunday during the school's annual commencement program.
Auman said the senior class epitomizes the importance of love and support which they have received from one another, school faculty and the community.
"We have generated a genuine sense of caring for each other over the past four years," Auman said.
She added that the class has faced many trials and tribulations over the past year.

Crusaders defend 9-A crown, beat Falcons 4-2

BRADFORD - The Elk County Catholic Crusader baseball team successfully defended their District 9 Class A championship Thursday by defeating the Coudersport Falcons by a 4-2 score in a game played at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford.
All the runs scored in the game came in the fourth inning as ECC scored four in the top half of the inning and the Falcons scored two in the home half of the inning.
“That was another great high school baseball game,” said ECCHS coach Father Eric Vogt. “All the runs came in one inning.”

Lady Chucks eliminate Lady Dutch from playoffs

BROCKWAY - The Punxsutawney Chucks handed the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch a 6-4 setback on Wednesday in the District 9-AAA championship game held at the Brockway Area High School softball field.
St. Marys fell behind early in the game, then rallied to grab the lead by a single run, but Punxsutawney regained the momentum and lead to eventually win the game by a 6-4 margin.

Gabler dedicates pavers at Mt. Zion Historic Park

MT. ZION – Rep. Matt Gabler (R-Clearfield/Elk) dedicated around a hundred new pavers at the Mt. Zion Historic Park during a Memorial Day ceremony held at the site on Saturday afternoon.
Gabler began by remarking that the first thing that came to his mind when he stepped up to the microphone was "thankfulness."
“That’s really what we’re here for to commemorate on Memorial Day. We’re thankful for the efforts of those brave men and women who have gone before us who have made all of this possible,” Gabler said.

Punxsy Chucks down Dutch 10-5 for AAA title

BROCKWAY - The Punxsutawney Chucks defeated the St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen by a 10-5 score Wednesday in the District 9 Class AAA championship game played at Brockway Area High School.
Punxsutawney advances to the PIAA Class AAA tourney, which opens Monday. They will take on the District 7 runner-up.
In Wednesday’s game, the Chucks came up with eight runs on four hits and an error in the fourth inning to break the game open.

Crusaders beat Clarion 2-0 to reach 9-A finals

BROCKWAY - The Élk County Catholic Crusaders advanced to the District 9 Class A championship game by defeating the Clarion Bobcats by a 2-0 score in a semifinal game played at Brockway Area High School.
The Crusaders will play the Coudersport Falcons, 6-4 winners over the Brockway Rovers, on Thursday at a site and time to be announced.
