East Branch safety project continues

The East Branch Dam Safety Modification Project is moving along. In June, design plans were completed as was approval to begin construction on the $280 million, multi-year project anticipated to have a 2017 finish date.

Conservation district to hold field day

The Elk County Conservation District will be hosting a Northwest Project Grass Grazing Field Day on Wednesday, July 13 at Sugar Hill Farm in St. Marys. The upcoming field day is the first such event to be held by the conservation district.
Conservation District Chairman Russ Braun explained that the idea for the event was suggested to the group by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Natural Resources Conservation Commission (NRCS).

Municipal authority resubmits proposal to DEP

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg Municipal Authority [JMA] held a special meeting yesterday afternoon to approve a revised proposal after the state Department of Environmental Protection [DEP] denied the Hunt Marcellus Operating Company's request to buy water from the municipal authority.
Authority members voted unanimously in favor of the revised proposal.
The agreement states that the JMA will supply 157,000 gallons of water at either the Silver Creek and Long Level Road intersection or at the Silver Creek Water Plant.

Floyd J. "Pinky" Wickett

Floyd J. "Pinky" Wickett Sr., 96, a resident of Elk Haven and formerly of Elk Towers and Martin Road, died Thursday, June 30, 2011 at the Elk Haven Nursing Home following a brief illness.
He was born July 18, 1914 in St. Marys, son of the late Francis J. and Anna Schreiber Wickett.
He was a lifelong resident of the area and attended St. Marys schools. He was a retired employee of St. Marys Carbon Co.
On October 28, 1949, in Morgantown, W.V., he married Ruth M. Mertz, who preceded him in death on Jan. 5, 2002.

Ruth A. Bartoletti, 92, of River Road, Caledonia, died Thursday, June 30, 2011 at DRMC West following a short illness.
She was born Aug. 28, 1918 in Penfield, daughter of the late Frederick and Ruth E. (Sexton) Spencer.
She married Charles M. Bartoletti on Oct. 2, 1937, and he preceded her in death on March 23, 1991.
