Council approves publishing drilling ordinance amendment

Mayor Sally Geyer informed members of council on Monday evening that she believed the city should move forward and publish their draft of the zoning ordinance amendment pertaining to oil and gas development.
"I believe that we have a solicitor and I believe that we hashed it out back and forth enough. I think we should move forward with what we have and we can always change, amend or whatever at another time," Geyer said.

Farm Bureau tour highlights logging industry

The logging industry in Elk County was the featured topic at this year's 15th annual Elk County Farm Bureau Legislative Tour, held Monday morning at Dave's Saw Shop on Linwood Avenue in St. Marys.
Congressman Glenn "GT" Thompson (R-5) and state Representative Matt Gabler (R-Elk/Clearfield) were among the attendees at the event, which included a group discussion on the logging industry, the challenges it faces and its affiliation with the agricultural industry. They were joined by Farm Bureau members and lumber industry representatives.

Leuschel sentenced on charges related to theft of over $200,000

Laurene L. Leuschel, 51, of St. Marys, was sentenced on Monday morning at the Elk County Courthouse in Ridgway by 59th Judicial District Judge Richard Masson for the charges of theft by unlawful taking, a grade three felony, and tampering with evidence, a grade one misdemeanor. Leuschel had previously pleaded guilty to the charges during the county’s monthly return day session on Friday, June 3. At that time, sentencing had been deferred so that a pre-sentence investigation report, including a forensic mental health evaluation conducted by Dr. David Webster, could be prepared.

Michael A. Bigley, 61, of 1914 Settle Road, Newark Valley, N.Y., died Monday afternoon, August 15, 2011, at Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City, N.Y. following a lengthy illness. He was surrounded by his family at the time of his death.
He was born December 14, 1949 in Pittsburgh, son of the late Frederick and Dorothy Wallace Bigley.
On February 5, 1972, in Holy Rosary Church, Johnsonburg, he married Lynn Steudler, who survives.
He graduated from Keystone Oaks High School, Pittsburgh. He also attended Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
