Council members mostly mum on motives

By now, most residents of the City of St. Marys are aware that members of the St. Marys City Council passed a series of resolutions on Thursday, Aug. 4, to begin the process of dissolving the city's parking authority. However, little information other than that is known due to the fact that the discussion leading up to that action all took place during executive sessions.

Legislators, owners, discuss logging industry challenges

Discussion about various aspects of the area's logging industry was the focus of this year's Elk County Farm Bureau's Legislative Tour held Monday at Dave's Saw Shop in St. Marys.
Congressman Glenn "GT" Thompson (R-5) and state Representative Matt Gabler (R-Elk/Clearfield) attended the event to discuss areas of concern within the logging industry.
"Logging is pretty much the same as farming, just on a longer-term scale," Cooney said, adding the industry typically does not receive any type of government subsidies.

Over 1,000 firemen coming to Kane for convention

More than 1,000 volunteer firemen will be coming to Kane for a three-day convention that begins Thursday.
The Kane Volunteer Fire Department is hosting the 119th annual convention of the Central District Volunteer Firefighter's Association (CDVFA). The organization, founded in 1892, meets annually for business meetings-- as well as for fun, relaxation and camaraderie.

Anna Mae Schutz, 86, of Elk Haven Nursing Home and formerly of Elk Towers and 114 Rightmeyer Street, St. Marys, died on Monday, August 15, 2011 at Elk Haven Nursing Home.
She was born January 29, 1925 in St. Marys, a daughter of the late Clair and Edna Mason Ford.
On November 14, 1945 in Sacred Heart Church, she married the Edward G. Schutz, who preceded her in death on January 30, 2006.
