Sign theft, damage cause for concern in Jay Township

At Thursday's meeting of the Jay Township Supervisors, both residents and officials shared their growing frustration and anxiety over a recent spate of theft and vandalism involving traffic and street signs.
Supervisor Murray K. Lilley said the theft of signage is costing the township a fortune. He estimated the cost of replacing a single stolen or vandalized sign at $250.

Right to transparency defended at supervisors meeting

The Thursday night Jay Township Supervisors meeting began with an exchange over freedom of information, with attendees defending their right to record such proceedings.
At Thursday's meeting, two attendees had handheld dictaphones and one had a video camera.
Supervisors said they were upset that information from a previous "special" insurance meeting on Aug. 5, 2011 had appeared in an area newspaper as well as on the internet.

Rhodes' poem chosen to appear in literary magazine

As a creative writing major, Jenna Rhodes of Kersey is off to a successful start, with one of her poems selected from among more than 5,000 submissions for publication in the 2011 edition of The Apprentice Writer literary magazine.
Now in its 29th year, The Apprentice Writer was created by Gary Fincke, professor of English and creative writing and director of the Writers’ Institute at Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove. The magazine publishes some 70 poems, stories, personal essays, photographs and works of art by high school students from a 20-state area.

Bodien family struggles after fire

Things went from bad to worse when a fire ripped through the home of Jim and Nancy Bodien at 45 Fremont Ave., Ridgway, last Saturday night.
The kitchen, dining room and bathroom took the brunt of the fire leaving the smoke and water to destroy the rest of the home.
Five miles away at Nancy's mother's residence, she received a call from her sister at about 10:10 p.m. Saturday night to tell her that her house was on fire.
Fortunately, no one was in the home at the time of the blaze.
