School board officials tout success of new academic year

At Monday's meeting of the St. Marys Area School Board, principals from the area's elementary, middle, and high schools declared the 2011- 2012 school year off to a good start. Christine Kuhar, principal at Bennetts Valley and Fox Township Elementary schools, said the numbers are holding steady, with 123 students at Bennetts Valley and 209 students at Fox Township.
Robert Grumley, principal of South St. Marys Street Elementary School, said the school has 99 new kindergarten students and 27 new students and transfers.

Community gathers for 9/11 memorial service

Community members gathered on Sunday evening inside the First United Methodist Church hall in St. Marys for the "Community 9-11 Memorial Service."
The event was hosted by the St. Marys Area Ministerial Association to commemorate the 10th anniversary of September 11.
The service began at 6 p.m. with an introduction and opening prayer by Chris Kindle, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, followed by the singing of the national anthem by Alexis Cunningham.
Each attendee received a small booklet entitled, "Never Forget Hope."

In speaking with area residents about the impact Sept. 11, 2001 had on their personal lives, outlooks, and relationships, it became evident that the events of that day have not faded from memory and still continue to exert a dramatic influence on the American consciousness.

Over 30 area motorcyclists join in America's 9/11 Ride

Recently a group of 30 motorcycle enthusiasts from throughout the area embarked on America's 9/11 Ride, a project organized by America's 911 Foundation, Inc., which visited each of the crash sites in Pennsylvania, Virginia and New York City as part of a 1,000-mile journey.
Julie and Jeff Smith of St. Marys acted as the local location hosts, having traveled with the memorial ride in 2008. Jeff has been a member of the Crystal Fire Department since 1980, having served as a firefighter, driver, EMT and chairman of the board.
