Members of the City of St. Marys Police Department conducted a drug awareness program Thursday evening at the Sacred Heart Activity Center, where attendees learned about area drug trends and how they have changed throughout the years.
Police Chief Todd Caltagarone, along with Patrolmen Gregg McManus; Mike Shaffer, K9 officer; and Anthony Pistner, all members of the drug taskforce team encompassing Elk, Cameron and Forest counties, interacted with the audience throughout the presentation and answered their questions and concerns.
Harry J. "Hal" Steis, 85, of 190 Taft Road, died Saturday, September 24, 2011, six days shy of his 86th birthday, at home while surrounded by his family.
He was born September 30, 1925 in St. Marys, a son of the late Harry Joseph and Ruby Smith Steis.
On July 29, 1949 in Johnsonburg Methodist Church, he married Alice Neilson Steis, who survives.
Gerald J. "Smitty" Smith, 91, of 103 Bayberry Road, St. Marys, died on Sunday, September 25, 2011 at Elk Haven Nursing Home following a short illness.
He was born February 27, 1920 in Ridgway, a son of the late Louis and Amelia Fileshifter Smith.
On December 26, 1951 in St. Marys, he married Audrey Resch Smith, who survives.
Smith was a lifelong resident of the area and had worked for many years at the Elk County Dairy. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and received a Purple Heart after being wounded. He was a member of the American Legion and enjoyed spending time with his family.
