KECA unveils youth conservation education program

BENEZETTE – Youth visiting the Elk Country Visitor Center in Benezette now have one more special "elk" to look forward to seeing. On Saturday afternoon, the Keystone Elk Country Alliance (KECA) officially unveiled "Benny," the mascot/ambassador for its new youth conservation education program.
"Benny is our youth program ambassador," said Elk Country Visitor Center operations manager Carla Wehler. "He will be the ambassador for our youth membership, our conservation program, things like that."

Rain can't dampen spirits at local Labor Day celebration

On Monday, the 59th annual Bennetts Valley Labor Day celebration contended with a constant rain, but event planners and attendees made the best of it.
Carl Smith of the Jay Township Fire Department, who has volunteered at the event for the last 40 years, said that while attendance was down Monday, Sunday saw record attendance.
"I think it's the weather today that's keeping people away. Yesterday we sold 107 armbands, we've never sold that many before," Smith said.

Elda M. Romanic, 78, of Bennetts Valley Highway, Byrnedale, died Saturday, September 3, 2011 at Nelson’s Golden Years of DuBois, following a lengthy illness.
She was born December 20, 1932 in Coal Hollow, daughter of the late Renaldo and Angelina (Bianchi) Gornati.
She married Andrew Romanic Jr., who died in 2000.
She lived most of her life in Byrnedale, was a graduate of Kersey High School and was a housewife.

Crusaders defeat Red Raiders 19-6 to open season

For the second year in a row, the Elk County Catholic Crusaders football team started off their season with a victory over the Cameron County Red Raiders, this time picking up a 19-6 victory. Both teams had plenty of extra time to consider their strategies during Saturday evening’s match-up at Dutch Country Stadium in St. Marys, as the game was delayed for an hour and 15 minutes during the second quarter due to visible lightning from a storm to the north of the county.

St. Marys cross country teams fare well at Big Valley Invitational

The St. Marys Area cross country teams opened their seasons on Saturday by competing in the Big Valley Invitational held at Reedsville.
The Dutchmen took fifth place with a total of 176 points. State College won the team title with 45 points, followed by Mifflin County 66, Altoona Area 78, Bellefonte 167 and St. Marys. There were a total of 12 teams represented in the boys’ AAA race.
