The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch volleyball team opened their home season on Tuesday by sweeping the Kane Lady Wolves by a 3-0 score at the SMAHS “Dutch Oven”.
St. Marys won the first game 25-19, took the second game 25-21 and won the third game 25-20.
“I thought we played with intensity tonight,” said St. Marys coach Erica Vogt.
“We served the ball decently but I would like to see some harder hits,” said the coach.
“I thought we covered well tonight. We gave the game ball to Chelsea Gregori who finished the night with 34 digs,” said Vogt.
The Lady Dutch were handed a minor setback on Tuesday afternoon as they came up short in a back-and-forth contest against Port Allegany, picking up a 3-2 loss to open their regular season. It was a cloudy and cool, yet dry afternoon at St. Marys Area High School's soccer field, despite it having rained off and on throughout much of the morning.
A considerable portion of the game was played on Port Allegany's side of the field as St. Marys kept Port keeper Jordan Edgell on her toes; however, the Lady Dutch were unable to get many shots into the goal.
The Elk County Catholic cross country teams opened their home seasons on Tuesday when they played host to the Punxsutawney teams.
The Crusaders beat the Chucks by a 24-31 score, while the Lady Crusaders defeated the Lady Chucks 27-30.

Community Development Block Grant [CDBG] projects for the fiscal year are in line after a public hearing Tuesday and subsequent meeting to approve allocations.
Among the figures are $55,000 for "slum and blight remediation" for the clearance and demolition of slum and blight properties within the county.
"We're going to try to take care of some of the blighted properties in Elk County," said Tracy D. Gerber, CDBG coordinator. "We're trying to focus on some of the properties that are in the repository at the county level.

Robert "Bert" Sorg has announced that he will mount a write-in campaign for Magisterial District Justice 59-3-03 for the Nov. 8 General Election.
"We're going to mount a good campaign. We're going to try it," Sorg said.

The Elk County Commissioners have publicly endorsed the implementation of a Marcellus Shale impact fee on each unconventional gas well in Pennsylvania.
"We had met with Senator [Joe] Scarnati and we were voicing our concerns for the human service side of this and they're going to be hit with this Marcellus Shale and housing, that part could be problematic," said Elk County Commissioner June H. Sorg. "I know a lot of folks are concerned about that and other programs of interest.
Betty E. Frank, 76, of 675 Montmorenci Ave., Ridgway, and formerly of 231 Spruce St., died peacefully Monday morning, Sept. 5, 2011, at Mountain Laurel Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Clearfield.
She was born July 18, 1935, in Ridgway, daughter of the late James A. and Twelda E. (Gulnac) Richards. She was married to Edmund J. Frank, who preceded her in death in 2001.
