SMASD board honors retirees, new arrivals

At Thursday night's meeting of the St. Marys Area School District Board of Directors, the board took time to honor newly retired teachers, as well as introduce and welcome some new faculty and staff members. Board President Joseph Goetz presented the group with plaques commemorating their service and tenure. Recipients were: Patricia Hamblin, Marcy Holland, Susan McDonough, Margaret Miller, Karen Moyer, George Neubert, Benita Taylor, Debbie Gschwendtner, Paula Braun and Jay Moore.

Reynoldsville woman facing attempted homicide charges

PUNXSUTAWNEY — A Reynoldsville woman faces two counts of attempted criminal homicide and other charges after she allegedly fired about six shots from a .22 caliber revolver at her husband behind a district judge's office Thursday.
One of the shots struck her husband's car, while another struck a private residence along Pleasant Alley, police said.

Fox Twp. Supervisors mull sharing code inspectors

During Thursday evening's Fox Township Supervisors meeting, the board discussed the possibility of entering into an inter-municipal agreement with Jay Township for Sewage Enforcement Office and building code inspector services.
Jay Twp. recently proposed the request to Fox Twp.
Supervisor Dave Mattiuz noted his disapproval of the idea, stating Fox Twp.'s Code Enforcement Officer (CEO) Robin Singer maintains a busy schedule with his work within the township.
Supervisor and Public Works Director Randy Gradizzi said he is not completely opposed to the idea.

Lady Crusader volleyball downs Lady Dutch 3-0

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader volleyball team evened their record at 1-1 on the regular season with a 3-0 victory over the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch last night at the ECCHS gym.
Elk Catholic won the first game by a 25-14 score. They took the second game 25-23 and won the third game 25-22.
“We played well offensively when we could run a solid defense in front of it,” said ECCHS coach Diane Gies.

ECC girls' soccer tops Kane

ST. MARYS – The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders broke open a close game in the second half Thursday at Benzinger Park on their way to a 5-0 varsity girls' soccer victory over the Kane Lady Wolves.
    Freshman Julia Sweeney scored once and set up two other scores in the second half outburst for ECC.
    "These young players are coming around well," said Lady Crusaders coach Don Fabiano. "It is so nice to see these players having success on the field."

Dutch golfers defeat Brockway 235-248

The St. Marys Flying Dutchmen golf squad picked up a win over visiting Brockway on Thursday afternoon at the Bavarian Hills Golf Course, defeating the Rovers 235 to 248.
"The team played really well today," said St. Marys coach Dan Vollmer following the match. "It was a much-needed win and we look forward to our home match against Ridgway and Kane next week."
Medalists for the day were St. Marys' Sam Miller and Brockway's Andy Genevro and Bret Corr, all of whom shot 11-over-par rounds of 46.

Elk Catholic golfers pick up 207-215 win over Ridgway

The Elk County Catholic High School golf squad picked up a victory over the visiting Ridgway Elkers on Thursday afternoon at the St. Marys Golf Club. The Crusaders won the match 207-215, with the top five scores from each team counting toward the total.
The medalist for the day was Elk Catholic's Elliott Struble with a four-over-par round of 39. The high scorer for Ridgway was Josh Roselli with a 41.

Lady Crusader tennis downs Lady Chucks 8-1

The Lady Crusader tennis squad defeated the Lady Chucks 8-1 on Thursday afternoon in matches played at Benzinger and Memorial parks in St. Marys. Despite the threat of rain, the teams were able to get in all their matches before the wet weather returned early in the evening.
"The weather cooperated and we were able to play a very competitive tennis match against a really nice Punxsy squad," said ECC head coach Pete Meier. "Punxsy has improved tremendously since last year. They have a wonderful group of young ladies, and it was a very enjoyable match to watch."
