The St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen picked up their ninth victory of the season on Tuesday evening as they defeated the Punxsutawney Chucks by a 52-45 score in a District Nine League encounter at the Punxsutawney Area High School gym.
The Dutchmen fell behind in the first quarter of play, but came on strong in the second quarter to take the lead at the half. They held the lead at the end of three by two points, then outscored the Chucks 15-10 in the final stanza to win the game by seven points.

Justin Quiggle led the Dutchmen in the scoring column on Tuesday with 19 points on seven field goals, a trey and a two-for-two night at the foul line. Ryan Uhl was next for the Dutchmen with 14 points, all coming on field goals. Jimmy Werner was also in double figures, finishing the night with 11 points on five field goals and a foul goal. Other Dutchmen reaching the scoring column were Ryan Mancuso with four points, and Dylan Reigel and Jordan Weinzierl with two points each. The Punxsutawney squad was led in scoring by Logan Weaver with 16 points on three field goals, two treys and a four-for-four night at the charity line. Daniel Triponey also hit in double figures, with 10 points on three field goals, a trey and a foul goal. Also scoring for the Punxsutawney Chucks were Jordan Mesoraco with eight, Darren Pifer and Alex Fedigan with five each and Corban Cressley with one point. The Punxsutawney Chucks grabbed the first-quarter lead as they were able to outscore the Dutchmen 10-8 in the first eight minutes of playing time. The Dutchmen came back in the second period to put 16 points on their side of the slate while holding the Chucks to 10 points to take a 24-20 lead into the locker room at the half. Following the halftime break, the teams exchanged buckets in the third quarter, with the Chucks finally outscoring the Dutchmen by two points, 15-13, to make the score St. Marys 37, Punxsutawney 35 with eight minutes left to play in the game. St. Marys controlled the tempo in the final period. They were able to extend their lead as the quarter went on, eventually winning the game by seven points, as they outscored the Chucks 15-10 to win by a final score of 52-45. Game notes St. Marys is now 9-3 overall on the season and 4-1 in District Nine League play. ---- The Dutchmen will return to action on Thursday night when they will travel to DuBois to take on the DuBois Central Catholic Cardinals in a non-league affair. The J.V. game is slated for 6 p.m. with the varsity to follow at 7:30 p.m. ----- St. Marys outscored the Chucks 48 to 36 from the field last evening. The Chucks took a 10-9 first-period lead, with the Dutchmen coming back in the second period to outscore the Chucks 14-10 to take a 22-20 halftime lead. The Chucks outscored the Dutchmen 18-16 in the third period to knot the game up at 38-all going into the final stanza. In the fourth quarter, the Dutchmen outscored Punxsutawney 14-13 to win the game by a 52-51 score. Albert Joseph Zwack, 93, of Mineral Point, Wis., died on Sunday, Jan. 16, 2011 at Upland Hills Health Care in Dodgeville, Wis. after suffering a stroke a week prior.
He was born March 26, 1917, son of the late Aloysius and Clara (Wilhelm) Zwack. Because of his mother’s early death and his father’s absence due to duty in the Merchant Marines, he was raised by his paternal grandparents in Marysville.
On Oct. 6, 1945 in St. Marys, he married Helen (Goldthorpe) Zwack, who preceded him in death in 2000.
James L. "Wilbur" Fritz Jr., 71, of 276 South Michael Circle, St. Marys, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2011 at the UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh.
He was born May 18, 1939 in St. Marys, son of the late James L. and Ruth Ryden Fritz Sr.
On Nov. 4, 1967, in the St. Mary's Church, he married Linda Francis, who survives.
Jodi Foster, community and economic development coordinator for the Elk County Planning Department, gave an update Tuesday morning at a board of commissioners meeting regarding the status of a source water protection plan impacting various municipalities in Elk County.
St. Marys resident Elizabeth Friedl once again addressed members of city council on Monday about the television service provided by Zito Media through the city's franchise agreement.
Friedl began by inquiring when the city's current agreement with Zito Media is set to expire. City solicitor Mark Jacob responded that the five-year contract will expire on Dec. 31, 2014.

"We make a variety of items out of dried flowers," Tracy said. "We've gotten flowers brought to us from funerals, weddings, birthdays--basically any type of special occasion."
Upon receiving fresh flowers they are immediately dried out. Some customers even bring in flowers already dried.
"We can work with any type of flowers, from lilies to mums. Roses are the most popular flower we work with," she added.
Anna Marie Herzing, 75, of Church Street, Tyler, died unexpectedly on Saturday, Jan. 15, 2011 at home.
She was born April 29, 1935 in Tyler, daughter of the late Angelo and Concetta (Paturzo) Cataldi.
On Oct. 21, 1961, she married William J. Herzing, who survives. Â
She was a homemaker who lived all her life in Tyler. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Force. She enjoyed playing cards, bingo, word searches and especially enjoyed her time with her grandchildren.

Led by Kayla Hoohuli’s 46 points, the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch defeated the Punxsutawney Lady Chucks by a 57-48 score last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
The Lady Chucks led 26-20 at the half. In the second 16 minutes of play, the Lady Dutch outscored the Lady Chucks by a 37-22 margin to win the game. Hoohuli finished the second half with 28 to go along with the 18 she scored in the first half.
The Lady Dutch had a rough shooting night in the first half, as they only hit on eight field goals. Punxsy led by six at the half.
