Daniel A. Smith

November 27, 2012

Daniel A. Smith, 64, of 131 Comet Rd., St. Marys, died Thursday evening, Nov. 15, 2012, at his residence following a short illness.
He was born May 17, 1948 in Rochester, N.Y., son of Duane N. and Charlotte Mattison Smith.
He married Patricia J. "P.J." Linehan on Dec. 20, 1969 in Binghamton, N.Y., and she survives.
He resided in St. Marys since 1984. He graduated from Chenango Valley High School in Binghamton, N.Y. and received a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from Clarkson University in Pottsdam, N.Y.

Elizabeth A. Rees

Elizabeth A. Rees, 95, of 224 Emmett St., Ridgway, died Monday evening, Nov. 26, 2012, at the Ridgmont Assisted Living Facility following a brief illness.
She was born Nov. 21, 1917 in Ridgway, daughter of the late Zachary and Angela (DiNardo) Gasbarre.
She married Karl E. (Kelly) Rees on May 8, 1948 in St. Leo Catholic Church, and he preceded her in death on Dec. 19, 2009.

Catherine Estelle Hess

Catherine Estelle Hess, 97, of Hollywood, Md., formerly from Suitland, Md., died on Nov. 22, 2012 in Leonardtown, Md.
Born on March 15, 1915 in Washington, D.C., she was the daughter of the late Karl Frederick and Maggie May Scheytt of Washington, D.C.
She was the loving wife of Thaddeus Stevens Hess Jr., whom she married on June 25, 1934 in Washington, D.C.
She graduated from Eastern High School in 1933 and moved to St. Mary’s County from Suitland, Md. in 1976.

Pauline J. Meyer

Pauline J. Meyer, 59, of 357 Meyer Rd., St. Marys, died unexpectedly Monday, Nov. 26, 2012 at her home.
She was born Jan. 9, 1953 in St. Marys, daughter of the late Edward and Kathleen Harlan Rollick. On March 10, 1979 in Johnsonburg, she married Richard M. Meyer, who survives.
She was a lifelong resident of the area, growing up in Byrnedale, and was a graduate of St. Marys High School, Class of 1970. She was a former employee of the County of Elk, St. Marys Pharmacy and was part-owner of the former M&M Creations in Ridgway.

Henry C. Friedl

Henry C. Friedl, 81, of Jersey Hollow Rd. in Little Valley, N.Y. ,died peacefully on Monday, Nov. 26, 2012.
He was born Sept. 29, 1931 in St. Marys, the son of the late Charles and Bertha (Wonderly) Friedl. He married Bonnie Hart-Friedl, who survives.
He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Air Force from 1951-1953. He worked as an over-the-road truck driver. He was an avid outdoorsman and a member of the Little Valley American Legion.

Vilmer W. Buchheit

Vilmer W. Buchheit, 96, of 586 Fillmore Rd., St. Marys, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012 at the family hunting camp in South Kersey.
He was born Feb. 21, 1916, in St. Marys, son of the late Charles and Germaine Goetz Buchheit. In 1939, in St. Mary's Church, he married Frances A. Herzing, who preceded him in death in 1976.
He was a lifelong resident of the area and attended St. Marys schools. He was a retired employee of the Keystone Carbon Co., retiring in 1980 after 43 years of service.

Agnes M. Auman

November 26, 2012

Agnes M. Auman, 92, a resident of Pinecrest Manor and formerly of Elk Towers and a former resident of Ridgway, died Monday, Nov. 26 at Pinecrest Manor after a brief illness.
She was born July 23, 1920, in St. Marys, daughter of the late Simon and Frances Fruehstorfer Schafman. On Oct. 25, 1941, in the St. Joseph Monastery, she married Eugene G. Auman, who preceded her in death on Aug. 26, 1983.

United Way funding affords more girls chance at scouting experience

Editor's Note: Throughout the next two months, the various community agencies that receive funding under the St. Marys Area United Way will be highlighted. The organization's fundraising campaign concludes on Dec. 15.

Natural gas-powered rigs now operating in Elk County

Elk County is now home to one of two drilling rigs converted from diesel to cleaner-burning liquified natural gas by Seneca Resources Corporation for use in its Marcellus Shale operations here. According to a press release from the National Fuel Gas Company, for which Seneca functions as an exploration and production subsidiary, the first rig powered by 100 percent liquified natural gas (LNG) was converted and integrated into Seneca operations in Lycoming County. The company is reportedly proceeding with plans to put a third rig built to run on both diesel and natural gas into use.

Hoffman shares life lessons with ECC students

"Listen to your teachers." "Study." "Be self-aware." "Be accountable." "Do not ever let anyone tell you 'no.'" This advice was given to students at Elk County Catholic High School during a recent academic assembly by guest speaker Dr. Micah Hoffman. Dr. Hoffman is a 2003 Summa Cum Laude graduate of ECC, and is currently a psychiatrist at the Jane and Terry Semel Institute for Neuroscience at the Stewart and Lynda Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital at the Ronald Reagan Medical Center of the University of California, Los Angeles Health System.
