Authority discusses possible hire at recycling center

RIDGWAY – At Tuesday's meeting of the Elk County Solid Waste Authority, a lengthy discussion was held concerning the possible hire of a worker(s) to aid in the running of the Elk County Community Recycling Center in the Stackpole Complex in St. Marys. The Elk County Commissioners were also present at the meeting to give their input on the matter.

Wish List items benefit CAPSEA shelter

CAPSEA, Inc. [Citizens Against Physical, Sexual and Emotional Abuse] has conveniently-placed Wish List drop-off boxes at three Northwest Savings Bank locations as part of an annual drive to assist in supplying abuse victims staying in the Ridgway shelter with the basic necessities.
Wish List drop-off boxes are located at the Ridgway, St. Marys and Johnsonburg Northwest Savings Bank office locations.
Wish List items include household items, cleaning supplies, paper products, food, gift cards for victims, and both drugstore and children's needs.

Thyroid health important year-round

While January may have been designated as Thyroid Awareness Month, the thyroid, a small, butterfly-shaped gland located in the base of the neck just below the Adam's apple, is important to individuals' health year-round.
According to information provided by Elk Regional Health Center, "although relatively small, the thyroid gland influences the function of many of the body's most important organs, including the heart, brain, liver, kidneys, and skin. Ensuring that the thyroid glad is healthy and functioning properly is important to the body's overall well-being."

Gloria M. Gigliotti, 82, of 6524 Ridgway-Johnsonburg Rd., Johnsonburg, died Monday afternoon, Jan. 30, 2012, at her residence following a brief illness.
She was born Aug. 11, 1929 in Johnsonburg, daughter of Lewis Olmstead and Leona Norlin Olmstead McMahon. On Feb. 10, 1951, she married Frank J. "Spider" Gigliotti in Ridgway; he preceded her in death April 26, 1999.

Lady Crusaders defeat Sheffield 58-23 in AML contest

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders completed play in the Allegheny Mountain North Division with a perfect 6-0 record with a 58-23 victory over the Sheffield Lady Wolverines Monday night at the ECCHS gym.
The Lady Crusaders opened a 13-2 first-period lead and led by as many as 30 points with 2:16 left in the contest.
“It was a good team effort tonight. We had balanced scoring and we moved the ball well against their zone and penetrated well,” said ECCHS coach Ken Pistner.
“The bench contributed a great deal tonight. The bench scored 34 points for us tonight,” added Pistner.

Jury foreman speaks out about Rebert trial

BROOKVILLE — A Punxsutawney man who served as the jury foreman in the Steven Rebert double-homicide trial, which concluded late Friday, said the jury became deadlocked while deliberating whether or not Rebert should be put to death.
Rebert was sentenced to life in prison by Jefferson County President Judge John H. Foradora, after the jury could not come to a consensus as to whether or not he should be put to death in the murders of Wayne and Victoria Shugar, both 61, Brockway, who were found shot to death in their home April 12, 2010.

Phillip Anthony DaMore Jr., DDS, 70, of 928 Fern Rd., St. Marys, died Sunday afternoon, Jan. 29, 2012 at his home.
He was born Dec. 2, 1942 in DuBois, son of the late Phillip A. DaMore Sr. and Mary Cecilia Marino DaMore. On Dec. 19, 1970, in the St. Matthias Episcopal Church in East Aurora, N.Y., he married Nancy Ernst, who survives.

Pa. governor to attend Groundhog Day ceremonies

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Break out the red carpet for the Groundhog Day trek to Gobbler's Knob for two important figures: Punxsutawney Phil and Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett.
The Groundhog Club's Inner Circle confirmed last week that Corbett and his wife, Susan, will indeed attend Groundhog Day 2012, serving as the guest speaker at the annual Groundhog Banquet Feb. 1 and making the trek with the Inner Circle the morning of Feb. 2.

Ice skating under way at Kaulmont Park, weather permitting

Despite the mercurial winter this year, the ice skating rink at Kaulmont Park is operational, though only as the weather permits, according to Winter Park Director Kurt Nesbitt.
"We are up and running now at the skate pond, but with the freezing and melting it is a day-to-day basis," Nesbitt said. "If the rain stays away and the nights continue to get cold we will have the park open on a steady schedule, so let's hope the rain stays away."
Nesbitt explained that there are a few factors that are taken into consideration regarding when the rink opens each year.

Susan V. Zito, 87, of 501 E. Second St., Emporium, died at her residence on Saturday morning, Jan. 28, 2012.
She was born Jan. 29, 1924, in Emporium, a daughter of the late Anthony and Amelia Nicolo Zito.
Susan graduated from Emporium High School. She retired from GTE, where she worked for many years. When she retired she was the only women to hold a patent at GTE Sylvania. Susan was a member of St. Mark Catholic Church.
