James Stephen Sennett

James Stephen Sennett, 89, of Seven Lakes, N.C., died Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012 at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital.
He was born in St. Marys, son of the late Clifford J. and Catherine F. Sennett. Following graduation from Penn State University, he was employed as Sales Manager for Stackpole Inc. He was an avid golfer, friend to all, a man of integrity and always a gentleman. He was a devoted husband and a loving father.
During WW II, he served in the Army Air Corps with the 319th Bombardier Squadron and was involved in combat duty in the Mediterranean Theatre.

Corinne D. "Cookie" Kuntz

Corinne D. "Cookie" Kuntz, 85, a resident at the Hacienda Rehab and Care Center in Sierra Vista, Ariz., and formerly of Elk Towers and 119 Maurus St., St. Marys, died on Sunday, Feb. 19, 2012 following a lengthy illness.
She was born Feb. 15, 1927 in St. Marys, a daughter of the late Clarence T. and Gertrude Klausman Decker. On Nov. 5, 1949 in Sacred Heart Church, she married the late Francis L."Frank" Kuntz, who preceded her in death on Sept. 29, 2005.

Catherine B. Glass

Catherine B. Glass, 92, formerly of St. Marys, died on Thursday, Feb. 9, 2012 in Colorado Springs, Colo.
In lieu of flowers or donations, the family requests that you reflect for a moment to honor the spirit and dedication of mothers like Catherine Glass whose legacy springs eternal. A memorial service is being scheduled and will be announced at a later date.

Painting complements courthouse

County officials expressed their gratitude Tuesday morning to Mrs. Lucille Armagost-Grabofski, a Ridgway native who now resides in Erie.
She recently presented a painting to the county's commissioners depicting the Elk County Courthouse.
"She grew up in Ridgway and painted this in 2010 of our courthouse," said Elk County Commissioner Daniel R. Freeburg. "It's an oil painting on canvas and she did it in memory of her father, Jay Gordan Armagost, he was a police officer here and he died in 1950.

County rebids recycling services

With a two-year contract drawing to a close in less than two months, county officials are reviewing bids from companies for ongoing recycling collections.
"The county is going to be ending a 2-year contract with ECSR [Environmental Coordination Services & Recycling]," said Bekki Titchner, recycling/solid waste coordinator for Elk County. "They've been providing services for our yearly household hazardous waste collection as well as ongoing collections for oil-based paints, pesticides, fluorescent lamps and batteries. The contract expires in April and we're rebidding for another two years.

Tynan's mastery of anatomy sets him apart in carving world

Although Ken Tynan of Butler makes a significant portion of his salary carving bears, his true passion lies in creating comic book and superheroes. For this year's Ridgway Chainsaw Carvers Rendezvous auction, Tynan has stuck with what comes naturally to him and has created a massive roaring grizzly out of white pine, weighing in at 400 pounds.
The 52-year-old Butler native drew attention in past years at the Rendezvous with his big green Hulk sculpture.

Ash Wednesday ushers in Lenten season

Today marks the start of Lent, an annual period of sacrifice and reflection that lasts for 40 days, not counting Sundays, leading up to Easter.
Fr. Ross Miceli, campus minister at Elk County Catholic High School, explained that Sundays are not counted because "if you do the math, you end up with like 46 days before Easter, so you can't count Sundays."

St. Marys Area swimmers record wins over DuBois

MARYS - If there is a recipe for ending a regular season on the highest note possible, the St. Marys Area swim and dive team certainly found it. Mix one pool record, one school record, 13 talented seniors, 18 top times then add in two winning season records and you have the kind of night that makes months of hard work well worth the effort.

Corinne D. "Cookie" Kuntz, 85, formerly of Elk Towers and 119 Maurus St., St. Marys, died on Sunday, Feb. 19, 2012 at the Hacienda Rehab and Care Center in Sierra Vista, Ariz. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Lynch-Green Funeral Home.

Donald L. "Slim" Cribbs

Donald L. "Slim" Cribbs, 77, of 1400 Million Dollar Highway, Kersey, died on Sunday, February 19, 2012 at his home.
He was born February 13, 1935 in Fox Township, a son of the late Thomas Cribbs and Rachel Bilodeau Cribbs Reichard. On July 21, 1962 in St. Boniface Church, he married Donna Resch Cribbs, who survives.
Mr. Cribbs was educated in the Fox Township schools and was a member of the St. Boniface Church. He served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the REACT club. He enjoyed photography and 4-wheeler riding.
