Michael J. Carr

Michael J. Carr of 641 Shelvey Summit Road, Kersey, died suddenly at Elk Regional Health Center, on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012. He was born March 15, 1955, in Hope, Maine, the son of Clarence J. and Madine L. LaBranche Carr. On August 7, 1977, he married Judith A. Caggiano, she survives. Michael was employed at Penncon and Ridgway Steel Fabricators, as a fitter welder and later at Keystone Carbon Co. in St. Marys, prior to starting his flooring business, Mike’s Custom Services in 1996. He was a member of the Ridgway Elks Lodge, St.

Dutchman Joe McLaughlin wins AAA title at 182 pounds

SMA sending seven wrestlers to NW Regional
CLARION - St. Marys Area wrestler Joe McLaughlin won the District 9-AAA 182-pound weight class championship Saturday at the District 9-AAA Individual Championships held at Clarion University’s Waldo Tippin Gymnasium.
The Dutchmen of coach Dominic Surra will be sending seven wrestlers to the AAA Northwest Regional Tournament scheduled for Friday and Saturday at the Altoona Area High School Field House.

BRADFORD - The St. Marys Area swim and dive team proved that they can rise to the occasion on Friday night when the Dutchmen captured the District 9 Swim & Dive Championship crown at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford’s Duke Aquatic Center. The Lady Dutch finished third in the field of five teams.

Kraus presents annual fire report

During 2011, the Crystal Fire Department responded to 276 incidents, an increase of 14 from the previous year, according to Bill Kraus, fire chief, during a recent City Council meeting where he presented the organization's annual fire report.
"Out of the 277 calls, we only had seven fires," Kraus said. "When people are in trouble, they call the guys in the big red trucks. We don't have a problem with those calls."
In 2011, there were 114 general alarms, 60 public service calls, 40 investigations, 39 rescue calls and 23 training events.

Chamber honors businesses, organization at annual dinner

The St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce presented "A Night at the Races" on Saturday evening as part of their annual dinner. Attendees gathered inside the Red Fern, which was transformed into a horse racetrack in conjunction with the event's theme.

Editor's note: This is the tenth and final part in a series of articles based on a presentation given by area historian and photographer Ray Beimel regarding items in the society's collection related to winter throughout the community's early history.

While old photographs can showcase many common activities and sights from winters throughout the community's history, local historian Ray Beimel explained during the Historical Society of St. Marys and Benzinger Township's recent banquet that not every picture is as it appears.

Music director in need of host families

RIDGWAY - Ridgway Area High School Music Director Theresa Morley-Palmer is looking for residents to open up their hearts and their homes and volunteer to house two more students during the regional choir competition.
As a host family, volunteers would provide a place for students to sleep on March 7, 8 and 9, a shower, a breakfast and a ride to and from school at 7:30 a.m. and 8:30 p.m.
According to Palmer, 160 students from 53 schools will be coming to Ridgway Area High School to audition for a chance to compete in the State Music Festival in Lancaster in April.

Mary Martha Halloran

Mary Martha Halloran, 94, a resident of the St. Marys Home in Erie and formerly of 131 Oilwell St., St. Marys, died early Sunday morning, Feb. 26, 2012, at the St. Marys Home East in Erie.
She was born June 30, 1917 in St. Marys, daughter of the late Patrick and Mary Welsh Fehley. On Aug. 7, 1946 in the Sacred Heart Church, she married Francis B. Halloran, who preceded her in death July 21, 1996.
Mrs. Halloran was a member of the Sacred Heart Church and volunteered as a secretary at the Sacred Heart Rectory and did volunteer work for the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.

Leslie J. Haas

Leslie J. Haas, 64, of 475 Lance Dr., Ridgway, died unexpectedly in Ridgway Township on Friday, Feb. 24, 2012.
He was born Sept. 12, 1947 in Allentown, a son of Marlowe Arner Haas of Emporium and the late James Haas.
On Aug. 17, 1969 in Williamsburg, Va., he married Janet Hutchens Haas, who survives.

Alice L. Ehrensberger

Alice L. Ehrensberger, 84, of 45 Plum St., St. Joseph's Terrace, Weedville, and formerly of Bucktail Road, St. Marys, died Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012 at the DuBois Nursing Home after an illness of the past several months.
She was born Dec. 31, 1927, in St. Marys, daughter of the late Allie and Agnes Dollinger Eckert. On April 21, 1947, in St. Marys, she married Wayne L. Ehrensberger, who preceded her in death on Oct. 8, 1993.
