Area residents will have the opportunity to hear quality live music on Saturday, March 3, when country bands The Kentucky Headhunters and Confederate Railroad will be perform at a community concert at the St. Marys High School auditorium.
The concert, sponsored by St. Marys Auto Body, is being held to give area residents a fun, affordable, family-friendly night out, according to St. Marys Auto Body owner and concert organizer Sandy Buerk.
Congressman Glenn "GT" Thompson spoke to area residents at Gunner's Restaurant in St. Marys Friday evening on a multi-stop, multi-county campaign tour. Thompson said government spending must be reined in to alleviate the burden on U.S. citizens and that job creation is a priority. He has co-sponsored legislation in the U.S. house that would help facilitate career and technical training for adults to expand job opportunities, particularly in Elk and other rural counties he represents.
St. Marys City Council approved the dates and times for the 2012 Bavarian Fall Fest during their recent meeting.
James M. Kiska, 55, of 441 Rightmeyer St., St. Marys, died Feb. 23, 2012 at the VA Hospital in Pittsburgh.
He was born July 3, 1956 in Pittsburgh, son of Chester J. Kiska of Portland Mills and the late Margaret A. “Nancy” McKelvey Kiska.
Mr. Kiska had resided in St. Marys the past 18 years and had attended Chartiers Valley schools. He served in the U.S. Marines from 1972-1978.
RIMERSBURG – A poster board hanging on the wall in the gymnasium at Union High School reads "We love the game because every dribble, shot, or pass is an opportunity for disaster or glory." The former was true for the #2 seeded Union Knights on Friday evening as they struggled to get any momentum going and saw their season come to an end, while the latter was true for the #7 seeded Elk County Catholic Crusaders as they led all the way to take a 59-38 win and advance to the semifinals of the District 9 Class A playoffs.

St. Marys eliminates Clearfield 59-48
HYDE - The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch basketball team advanced to the District 9-AAA championship game by defeating the Clearfield Lady Bisons 59-48 last night at the Clearfield Area High School. The championship game is scheduled for Saturday, March 3 at Clarion University’s Waldo Tippin gymnasium at a time to be announced.
The Lady Dutch will meet the winner of tonight’s Punxsutawney at Bradford game.
The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders jumped out to an early lead against the Port Allegany Lady Gators on Thursday evening in a District 9 quarterfinal game at ECCHS, and continued to pull away to take a 50-24 victory.
Elk Catholic coach Ken Pistner credited the team's good start with being very important to their overall success on the evening.
ST. MARYS - The diving portion of the 2012 District 9 Swim & Diving Championships was held on Thursday evening at the SMAHS natatorium. The Lady Dutch and Dutchmen were well-represented, with six of the 13 divers from the participating teams of Clearfield, DuBois and St. Marys.Â
While completing taxes can be confusing for even the most well-organized person, trying to understand the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) and how it applies is perhaps one of the most confusing tax issues for the average American.
Robin L. Kuleck, a certified financial planner working in Elk and Cameron counties, said the main goal of taxing people is to raise revenue to support essential government functions and can also be used to change behaviors, such as tax benefits for pursuing higher education or tax penalties for early distribution from a retirement plan.
In preparation for the annual Ridgway Chainsaw Carvers Rendezvous auction taking place beginning at noon on Saturday, carvers were working steadily on Thursday afternoon to complete their wooden works of art. Pieces must be completed by noon today.
Debbie Tremko of Arlington, Wash., created a large welcome sign being held by three dogs, a black, chocolate and yellow Lab. She entitled her piece "Saw Dogs." In addition, Tremko created a black dog sculpture with a welcome sign hanging from its neck which she plans to gift to a local Ridgway bar.
