South Fayette ends Lady Dutch season with 43-36 win

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch basketball team saw their 2011-12 season come to an end last night in McDonald when they were eliminated from the PIAA Class AAA girls’ tournament by the South Fayette Lady Lions by a 43-36 score.
While the Lady Dutch held a three-point lead at the half, 24-21, a poor third quarter was the big difference in the contest. The Lady Lions were able to outscore the Lady Dutch by a 12-2 margin in the third period of play.

Leon R. Swackhammer

Leon R. Swackhammer, 84, of Upper Cherry Road, Kersey, died Sunday, March 4, 2012, at home after a short illness.
He was born Nov. 20, 1927 in Benezette, son of the late David & Mildred (English) Swackhammer.
On Sept. 13, 1952 he married Amelia Parisi, who survives.
He lived all his life in Elk County and enjoyed bowling and fishing. He worked at Airco Speer of St. Marys from 1955 until his retirement as General Foreman in 1989.
He was a veteran, having served in the Army during WWII.

Alice R. Haberberger

Alice R. Haberberger, 90, a resident of Elk Haven Nursing Home and formerly of 136 Wehler Road, St. Marys, died on Monday, March 5, 2012 at the nursing home.
She was born Dec. 2, 1921 in St. Marys, a daughter of the late Anthony and Catherine Quigley Haberberger.
She graduated from Mercyhurst Seminary in Erie, Class of 1939. She then attended Southern Seminary & Junior College in Buena Vista, Va. and the Washington School for Secretaries in Washington, D.C. She worked as a secretary at Stackpole Carbon Company for 38 years. She was also a member of Queen of the World Church.

Details emerge about SR 255 project

PennDOT's Dean Ball updated city officials on Monday evening regarding the proposed timelines of the massive road reconstruction project taking place next year along State Route 255, encompassing a large section of the Million Dollar Highway.
Currently the project is on schedule and will be advertised this fall with hopes the contractor will begin by late fall. Also progressing smoothly are right-of-way acquisitions which will be ready for the advertisement of the project.

Commissioners act on fees

RIDGWAY – The Elk County Commissioners voted Tuesday morning in favor of "impact fees" that will be assessed on Marcellus Shale and Utica Shale natural gas wells throughout the county.
"This enables the Public Utility Commission [PUC] to come in and gather the fees that are allowed under this act," said Elk County Commissioner Daniel R. Freeburg. "A portion of it will be returned to the counties and municipalities.
"We've had calls from the public asking us to do this-- we've had discussions with industries and they seem to be at least not opposed to it."

Girl Scouts celebrating 100th anniversary this weekend

Area Girl Scout troops will mark the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouts in the United States with a special Mass and ceremony at 11 a.m. this Sunday at St. Mary's Catholic Church.
In past years, ceremonies have been held at various area churches of different religious dominations, and St. Mary's Church has been chosen for this year's venue.

Mission trip teaches students life lessons

Several area students recently had a hands-on life lesson in service as they participated in a week-long mission trip to the Dominican Republic. The students were part of a group of area residents who took part in the trip, which was held through the organization Meeting God in Missions. While all eight are currently students at Elk County Catholic High School, they noted that the trip was not a school-sponsored function.

SMA qualifies 11 for PIAA swim and dive championships

STATE COLLEGE - The St. Marys Area High School Swim and Dive Team successfully showcased their talents at the District VI/IX AA Swimming and Diving Regional Championships held at the Penn State McCoy Natatorium this past weekend. Besides winning medals, the top three positions in each event qualify for the PIAA AA Swim and Dive Championships at Bucknell University on March 16-17.
