Northwest Savings Bank celebrates 10 years in downtown office

A week-long celebration is under way at Northwest Savings Bank's office in downtown St. Marys as the business celebrates 10 years in its current location.
According to office manager Linda Decker, the current office unofficially opened on March 18, 2002 and a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on March 22. Prior to that, the office was located in a building along Brusselles Street that has since been torn down to make way for the addition of Sheetz.

Council pursues receiving oil, gas rights

St. Marys City Council approved for Solicitor Tom Wagner to pursue discussions with the Kaul and Hall Oil and Gas Company in conveying its oil, gas and mineral rights over to the city due to the dissolution of the company by the end of the year.

Alice A. Ginther

March 19, 2012

Alice A. Ginther, 91, of 1767 Bucktail Rd., St. Marys, died on Friday, March 16, 2012 at Pinecrest Manor following a lengthy illness.
She was born Nov. 27, 1920 in Truman, a daughter of the late George and Anna Bates Filling.
On Oct. 28, 1944 in First United Methodist Church, she married Urban Ginther, who survives.
Alice graduated from Emporium High School and was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She greatly enjoyed fishing and picnicking in Hicks Run. She also enjoyed crocheting and crossword puzzles. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family.

Viewing party set for tonight as Pip battles on 'The Voice'

ST. MARYS - Pip, the son of St. Marys native Jim Arnold, will once again be appearing on NBC's "The Voice" this evening, and area residents are encouraged to attend a viewing party at ChinAmerica Palace in St. Marys to support the young singer.
Pip's aunt, Laura Claypool, has organized the event, which she described as a way for Pip's local supporters to "bite their nails together" as they wait to see if he makes it to the next round in the competition. The show starts at 8 p.m.; however, individuals can come early and take advantage of some "Pip" food specials.

Daffodil Days convey symbol of hope for cancer patients

Daffodils will be springing up throughout Elk County beginning Tuesday, which marks the start of the American Cancer Society's Daffodil Days event.

Local women 'Fight for Air' in climb for lung disease

On March 24, Cheri Cheatle of St. Marys will be one of many climbing the 45 flights of stairs, or 897 steps, to the top of One Oxford Center in Pittsburgh, not as a feat of endurance or as a contestant in a race, but rather as part of a cause near and dear to her heart.
The sixth annual Pittsburgh Fight for Air Climb will draw many, like Cheatle, who hope to raise awareness and funding for lung disease through their efforts.

SMA swimmers set school records at PIAA state meet

LEWISBURG – The two days at Bucknell’s Kinney Natatorium were well-spent for the Dutch and Lady Dutch swimmers and divers when they competed at the PIAA AA State Championships this past wekeend. The team came home with a state medal, three school records, All-American honors and numerous best times as a result of their efforts.

Rose Marie Ginther, 85, of 301 Ford Rd., St. Marys, died peacefully at her home on Friday, March 16, 2012 surrounded by her family.
She was born Nov. 17, 1926 in St. Marys, a daughter of the late Marco and Helen Delisimunovic Paropacic.
On Nov. 28, 1953, she married Gervase Ginther, who survives.

Barbara A. Meyer

Barbara A. Meyer, 60, of 117 Grandview Rd., St. Marys, died at her home on Saturday, March 17, 2012 surrounded by her dear cousins and friends following a lengthy illness.
She was born May 17, 1951 in St. Marys, a daughter of the late Leander "Gump" and Elizabeth "Betty" Geyer Meyer.
Barb was a lifelong resident of the area and a member of the St. Mary's Church. She graduated from St. Marys Area High School and had worked at Stackpole for many years. She also worked at Metaldyne.  She enjoyed trips to Salamanca, playing cards and spending time with her animals, especially her dog, Ghost. 

Thomas C. Hansen

Thomas C. Hansen, 74, died Saturday, March 17, 2012 following a brief illness.
He was born in Erie in 1938. He was employed by Motion Control Industries from 1969 to 2002.
He is survived by his wife, Susan; one daughter, Cindy, her husband Ed, and their three children, Eddie, Emily, and Haley; a son, Gary and his wife Shannon (Strom) and their three children, Amberlin, Trevor, and Taylor; two sisters, Mary Lou and her husband Clarence of North East, Pa., and Linda and her husband Leslie of Erie. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
