Supervisors concerned about drilling ordinances

RIDGWAY - Township supervisors from Elk County had concerns about the state’s new oil and gas drilling law versus local ordinances at a recent meeting of the Elk County Gas Task Force.
Fox Township Supervisor and Roadmaster Randy Gradizzi and Jay Township Supervisor Murray Lilley questioned representatives from the State Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) about protections in the new law (Act 13 of 2012) and whether they were sufficient to adequately shield area residents and water sources from the impact of Marcellus Shale drilling.

Mayor supports duty-free imports from Philippines

RIDGWAY - Ridgway Mayor Guillermo Udarbe and Consul General of the Philippines Mario De Leon Jr. and his staff attended a meeting with Congressman Glenn Thompson [PA-5] Wednesday afternoon at his office in Bellefonte to encourage sponsorship of a bill aimed to allow the duty-free entry of Philippine garments into the U.S.
Currently the bill, H.R. 2387, Save Our Industries Act, has 20 bipartisan cosponsors hoping to grant the duty-free entry of Philippine garments into the United States if the textiles and fabrics are made in the U.S.

Provisions of new Marcellus Shale law explained

RIDGWAY - Representatives from the state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) presented some more in-depth information about the state's newly enacted legislation dealing with Marcellus Shale drilling at a Tuesday meeting of the Elk County Gas Task Force.
Act 13 of 2012 amends the state's oil and gas regulations and was signed into law by Governor Tom Corbett on Feb. 14, 2012. The law implements an unconventional gas well fee, or a drilling impact fee, and directs funds generated by the impact fee to local and state governments.

Mission complete: Letters From Home program to retire

After nine years of supporting U.S. servicemen and women by sending care packages all over the world, the Letters From Home program is retiring on Sunday, April 22 following its 35th and final campaign.
"By all means, the military has told us our mission is complete. We've had a wonderful, wonderful ride, made a difference, met a lot of nice people and couldn't be more proud," said Christine Jovenitti, LFH founder and director who established the program in May 2003 when her son's unit was deployed to Iraq.

George M. Uhl

George M. Uhl, 83, of 718 Uhl Rd., St. Marys, died Tuesday evening, April 10, 2012, at the UPMC Hamot Hospital in Erie after a brief illness.
He was born June 18, 1928, in St. Marys, son of the late John T. and Edna Schaberl Uhl. On April 30, 1955, in the Sacred Heart Church, he married Marie T. Wilhelm, and she preceded him in death on Oct. 23, 1995.
He was a self-employed plumbing and heating contractor with Feldbauer & Uhl, Inc.

David A. Sharp

David A. Sharp, 88, of Clearfield, died on Wednesday, April 11, 2012 at his home, which he made with his sister Catherine Coder of Clearfield.
He was born on Sept. 3, 1923, in Brush Run, Clarion County, son of the late Harry W. and Alverta Macinch Sharp.
He was employed as a coal miner, and was a member of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church of Clearfield. He was also a member of the Clearfield Veterans of Foreign Wars F. Michael Sicks Post #1785.
He served in the U.S. Army during WWII.

Amer V. Haight

Amer V. Haight, 92, of 123 Swede St., Dagus Mines, died Tuesday, April 10, 2012, at the Pinecrest Manor after a brief illness.
He was born Dec. 2, 1919, in Emlenton, son of the late Joseph Curtis and Ozzie Silvis Haight. On Jan. 25, 1946, in Miola, he married Violet R. Allshouse, who survives.
He had been a resident of the area since 1951. He attended Elder Township School and was a retired employee of Airco Speer, retiring in 1972 after 27 years of service.
