EQT speeding up fracking plan in Jay Twp.

WEEDVILLE - Representatives form EQT Corporation, a Pittsburgh-based natural gas company, were present at Thursday's meeting of the Jay Township Board of Supervisors to declare their intent to frack wells at the company's Grey Hill Road site.

Union rep: 'Not budging'

Members of Local Labor Union 2448 of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers [IAMAW] continued their strike Thursday against Clarion Sintered Metals [CSM] in order to obtain their goals of less mandatory overtime, a better pension plan and the same percentage wage for workers.
According to Robert D. Miller, a business representative of District Lodge No. 98 of IAMAW, negotiations have been nonexistent.

PAWS Gala to benefit Elk County Humane Society

The Elk County Humane Society is hosting a PAWS Gala on Saturday, April 28 in an effort to raise funds for a new medical room at their shelter.
This is the organization's third gala, with its inaugural gala taking place in 2004 and a smaller gala held in 2007. All proceeds will benefit the society will be used for the medical room and general upkeep of the shelter, located on E. Eschbach Road in St. Marys.

Lady Crusaders defeat Curwensville Golden Tide 6-1

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader softball team improved to 9-0 on the season with a 6-1 victory over the Curwensville Golden Tide Thursday afternoon at Benzinger Park.
The Lady Crusaders used a three-run fifth inning to secure the victory. Elk was up 3-1 at that time.
The Lady Crusaders were led offensively by Rachel Stauffer with a triple and two singles. Taylor DaCanal had a triple and a double. Both Stauffer and DaCanal had two RBIs each. Taylor Schlimm had the other hit for Elk, a single.

Joseph D. Stidd

Joseph D. Stidd, 53, of St. Marys, formerly of Bradford, died on Wednesday, April 18, 2012 at the Bradford Manor.
He was born on Aug. 26, 1958 in Bradford, the son of Audrey B. Fiori Stidd and the late Daniel M. Stidd.
He was a 1976 graduate of the Bradford Area High School.
He was a United States Army veteran who served from 1976 to 1979.
He was employed by DeLullo Trucking, St. Marys, as a heavy equipment mechanic.

Walter E. Biel

Walter E. Biel, 91, of 3712 Wilcox Rd., Wilcox, died Thursday morning, April 19, 2012 at Elk Regional Health Center in St. Marys following a brief illness.
He was born on Feb. 20, 1921 in Portage, son of the late John E. and Anna Biel Biel. On Dec. 28, 1939, he married Elsie Marie Jordan Austin; she preceded him in death March 11, 1973.
He resided in Wilcox most of his life and attended Wilcox schools. He was a member of Holy Cross Church, Rasselas, and the Wilcox Sportsmen's Club. He was an avid woodsman, hunter and fisherman. He loved vegetable and flower gardening and bowling.

Dutch baseball falls to Altoona 17-3 Thursday

The St. Marys Area Dutch baseball squad fell to Altoona 17-3 on Thursday afternoon in a contest at Berwind Park.
"That final score doesn't constitute how this game was, I don't think. I think we played better than the 17-3 score," said St. Marys Area coach Tony Azzato.
Altoona took a three-run lead in the first inning and went up 4-0 with another run in the second. Both teams scored a run in the fourth to make the score 5-1 and the Dutchmen pushed two more runs through in the fifth to cut the Mountain Lions' lead to 5-3.
