Glenn E. “Buzz” Powell, 82, of Brookville, died Monday morning, April 23, 2012, at the McKinley Health Center in Brookville. He was born on Feb. 28, 1930 in Ringgold, the son of the late William G. and Arveta M. (Snyder) Powell. On March 9, 1952, he married Charlotte M. (Smith), who preceded him in death on Feb. 22, 2001. He served his country during the Korean War with the United States Army and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was the owner and operator of Powell’s Garage and Rebuilds in Roseville and enjoyed sprint car racing.
There weren't many surprises in Tuesday's Pennsylvania primary election results in Elk County. As of press time, with all 33 precincts reporting, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney captured the Pa. Republican presidential nomination and will face President Barack Obama in the fall. Romney easily outdistanced former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, Texas Congressman Ron Paul and former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum to take the nomination.
On Friday evening, New York Times best-selling author RoseMarie Terenzio will make an appearance at the St. Marys Public Library, where she plans to discuss her book "Fairy Tale Interrupted: A Memoir of Life, Love and Loss." The event offers a night of recollections of John F. Kennedy Jr. from Terenzio, his former personal assistant and confidante.
The St. Marys Public Library and local author John Schlimm are co-hosting the event, which begins at 7 p.m. with refreshments. At 7:30, there will be a question-and-answer session with Terenzio and book signing to follow at 8 p.m.
At Thursday's meeting of the Jay Township Board of Supervisors, questions were asked concerning progress in resolving a discrepancy within the 2011 audit in which the township's holdings were overstated by roughly $105,000.
The discrepancy was first brought to the public's attention at March's meeting of the board, when Jay Twp. Supervisor Murray K. Lilley announced a disparity specific to the township's general fund balance.
