Council backs golf authority loan, turns funds over to RDA

April 5, 2012

A request from the Benzinger Township Golf Authority for St. Marys City Council to approve a loan guarantee for the organization was recently approved.
Benzinger Township Golf Authority Chairman Herb Straub appeared before council at Monday's meeting to answer several questions council members posed to the authority. Also in attendance at the meeting from the authority were members Bill Bauer, Steve Bagley and John Dippold.

PSSA exams topic at SMASD workshop

With administration of the PSSAs at the halfway point in the St. Marys Area School District, district Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment Joe Collins discussed the academic atmosphere surrounding the first half of the examination process.
"The kids are working hard; from what I've heard from administrators, spirits are up, the kids are confident," Collins said.

Alvin L. Hoffman

Alvin L. Hoffman, 79, of 628 S. Michael St., St. Marys, died Thursday, April 5, 2012 at Pinecrest Manor following an illness of the past several months.
He was born Aug. 3, 1932, in St. Marys, son of the late Anthony and Marie Sporner Hoffman.
On July 20, 1957, in Brookville, he married Anna M. Allegretto, who survives.
Mr. Hoffman was a lifelong resident of the area and attended St. Marys schools. He was a retired employee of Carbone of America, retiring in 1995.

Louise A. Glatt

Louise A. Glatt, 91, of 108 Irishtown Rd., Fox Manor, Kersey, died Thursday March 5, 2012 at Elk Haven Nursing Home following an illness of the past several months.
She was born Feb. 19, 1921 in Benezette, daughter of the late Raymond and Kathleen Von Reibnitz Sexton.
She was a lifelong resident of the area and attended Benezette schools. She was part owner of the former Glatt's Inn in Kersey and had worked at Sylvania in Emporium for many years.
On Jan. 12, 1952 in Kersey, she married Robert E. Glatt, who preceded her in death on Jan. 10, 1998.

Frank W. Garner

April 5, 2012

Frank W. Garner, 90, of Pinecrest Manor and formerly of 544 Kerner Ave., St. Marys, died on Wednesday, April 4, 2012 following a lengthy illness.
He was born Feb. 20, 1922 in St. Marys, a son of the late Karl and Verna Zeigler Garner.
On Dec. 5, 1949 in St. Mary's Church, he married the late Bertha Herzing Garner, who preceded him in death in 1989.
Mr. Garner was a lifelong resident of the area and was a member of the St. Mary's Church. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and was the recipient of a Purple Heart after being wounded in Germany in 1944. 

Dawn E. Baker

Dawn E. Baker, 49, of 106 Abbot Rd., St. Marys, died Wednesday, March 4, 2012 at her residence following an illness of the past several months.
She was born July 29, 1962 in Ridgway, daughter of the late Robert and Marion Stewert Hoffman.
She was a lifelong resident of the area and a graduate of Johnsonburg High School, Class of 1980. She was employed at MPP in St. Marys.

Lady Dutch softball blanks Ridgway 13-0 in five innings

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch softball team raised their record to 3-1 with a 13-0, five-inning victory over the Ridgway Lady Elkers Thursday afternoon at the SMAHS softball field.
Rachel Ginther of the Lady Dutch threw a one-hitter as she faced 16 batters, striking out nine and giving up a single to the first batter she faced, Jenni Thomas.
Taylor Roseto started on the mound for Ridgway and worked one inning, giving up one hit, walking three and striking out one. Jenna Hoffman worked three innings, giving up five hits and walking four.

Local autism center works amid nationwide rise in cases

According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an estimated one in 88 children in the U.S. is currently living with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), marking a 23 percent increase since the last report was issued in 2009. The findings were released March 29, just days before Autism Awareness Month, a national observance since the 1970s, began in April.

Fox Supervisors discuss new business

The Fox Township Supervisors approved several new business items during their Wednesday evening meeting.
Among them was an application to submit to Elk County for seal coating funds. The county has $12,000 in liquid fuel funds available to each municipality for use on eligible projects.
They adopted a resolution urging the PA General Assembly to eliminate or amend the State Prevailing Wage Act. The Pennsylvania State Association of Township Supervisors (PSATS) encourages municipalities to take this action.

SWA recycling pilot plans moving forward

RIDGWAY - At the Tuesday meeting of the Elk County Solid Waste Authority, Recycling/Solid Waste Coordinator Bekki Titchner said representatives from the National Association for PET Container Resources (NAPCOR) and the PA Recycling Markets Center will soon visit the county's community recycling center in regard to a pilot project to collect and recycle PET thermoform packaging. PET (polyethylene terephthalate) is a strong, food-safe plastic used to make many types of containers, including soft drink and water bottles.
